Hi all, I'm starting college soon and I want to build my first PC. This is what I have put together so far. Any advice and tips are much appreciated!

Case - Cooler Master CM690

Mobo - EVGA nForce 750i Sli FTW

CPU - e8400 3ghz Wolfdale

GPU - EVGA GTX 260

Memory - 4gb Corsair 800mhz

PSU - Corsair 650 watt

HD - Western Digital 500gb

Optical drive - Light On Blu-ray player

I've been out of the loop with computers for the past year or so, so if I've put together anything that isn't compatible or if there are name brands here that I should avoid please tell me. I'm trying to not go over 1000$ on the build so keep that in mind if there is anything I could change. This will also be my first time ever putting a computer together so any advice in that area would be appreciated also.

Thanks

~JM

The power supply WILL hold you back. Yeah, it will get the job done...for now. But what about the future. You need something with more than 1 8-pin. Look at the future graphics cards. The 280 and the 295. You will not be able to upgrade to those. With the 300 series coming out this fall who knows what they will require. Do yourself a favor and buy a more expensive PSU. I did the same thing as you(not exact same parts) I bought an Antec 650W. I want to upgrade graphics (im running 8800). Now the only way to upgrade is to buy a new PSU and GPU. I hope you see where im going with this...

Looks great to me. I disagree with the PSU comment. I don't see it holding you back unless you use every single molex adapter on your rig. They do make adapters to go from molex to 4 or 8 pin. If you crossfire down the road you should be able to power it resonably well unless you get two true power hogs. But there is no reason to do so with a 260 unless you have a massive resolution and demand all of the eye candy all of the time.

Thanks for the comments, both of you. What about the 750 watt corsair? (it's the same price too after the rebate! Also has 4 6 pin connectors.) I don't plan on using Sli or Crossfire anytime soon, I hear using two or more cards can be kind of buggy and would be better off with just one High end card, but it would be nice to still have the option available in the future.

Also, when setting up my rig (when I get the parts) will I have to flash the Bios with my particular Mobo? I've never done anything in that area and that is the only thing I'm skeptical about with building my own computer.

I do not see why you would need to flash the BIOS. You might need to update if a major security or bug fix has been released, but that is normally not necessary. Some may disagree with me there, but check google on your particular board and see if anything big comes up, otherwise you will be fine.

As far as a bigger PSU goes... Go ahead if you want, you will have plenty of power with the 650watt, but you will also be perhaps a bit more futureproofed with a bigger one.

Its not power in general im talking about. Im saying, "there is only 1 eight pin power chord. one for your mobo, none for your GPU." Any future upgrades that require a 8 pin chord are void. Unless you buy a connector going from 2 four pins to an 8 pin or buy a PSU with more than 1 eight pin. So no. I would not buy that 750W either. As for flashing your BIOS. I have the 790i Ultra. Flashing the BIOS is easy cause they give you a .exe file. Maybe the 750i does not take an 8 pin. So the 650 would be fine. Im assuming the 750 takes an 8 pin.

True but aside from the 295 what video cards require an 8pin power? But yes he did upgrade to a video unit with a 8pin he would have to buy an adapter and use two molex to power it.

The 300 series, naturally. They will be here this Fall. So his system will be ok for the next year and a half. Maybe 2, but once he decides to upgrade his GPU he will be forced to buy a new PSU. OR....he will by the adapter, but it wont look very nice and will stop air flow.

I didn't realize that about the 8-pin power slots on the newer cards, I see what you are talking about now. Do either of you have a suggestion on a good power supply that would last a good bit into the future? I don't mind paying extra for something I wont have to upgrade again for a while.

More powerful components do not necessarily always mean more power consumption. I agree that the 300 series probably will, but it being released this fall is just speculation at this point. You will have to spend a lot more I assume to get a 2x 8pin power supply. Honestly I believe you will be fine. If in a year and a half you feel the need to spend $500 on a video card, spend an extra $100 and get a new PSU, but for now save your money. Besides as I said before unless you plan on maxing out all of your molex connectors you can always use an adapter. 2x4 pin molex = 8pin pciE. But as sgt said, you will be needing to do something if you decide to upgrade and you buy a psu that cant handle it. Let me look around for a PSU with 2x 8pin I haven't actually specifically seen any yet (wasn't looking for them albeit)

Only reason is the 750i Sli FTW mobo isn't on newegg, a friend recommended it to me so I figured I would stick with that. Unless there is one of equal value on newegg I don't know about?

Thanks

~JM

Ooo, thanks! I'll definitely take ordering from newegg instead into consideration.
