howdy all.

I have been playing WoW for quite a time (5 years), and its time to move on to an other game.
The problem is.... I am not sure what game i want..

I have tried the FF series, Guildwars. And FF i liked the most, but the subscription is way to expensive and i do not own a creditcard.

So i am looking for alternatives.
The main important thing for me when playing an MMO is the story and gameplay.

And i prefer to play in first or third person..

Who can give me some advice or ideas?

How did you pay for WoW, yet not have enough money to pay for Final Fantasy? Try Runes of Magic. It is kinda like WoW, but a lot of people like it.

If you wanna experience something new that you haven't seen before, I would go for Ultima Online. It's free and most people claim it as the best MMORPG of all time. Just take a look at some private servers... Here http://www.game-master.net/pit/ubbthreads.php

#Fallen earth - open beta , bit clunky but sick post apocaliptic mmorpg with fps flavor
#Runes of magic - free copy of wow ^^
#City of vilains/heroes - probably one of the best my played games , but its bit old ... aw and there is coming 2 games that looks almost the same as this game i think they are called CHAMPIONS online and DC online ...
#Aion - nice graphics , not bad gameplay , buts it looks like ussual korean mmorpg ...
#D&D - is coming free , its only pve game and its a bit empty but its realy fun ( just like board game just no dice =/ ) "i search for hiden walls ! " =D
#Battleforge - its developed by ea ( you know what that means , huge minor paymens and all that shi* ) its kinda mix of mmorpg and rts , you have card deck u get orbs for power and summon monsters cast spells , destroy things ... ( remind yu-gi-oh )
#Warhammer online - bit slow but sick game , has so much to do , just with pvp part it kinda sucks coz you can only go 15v15 ...
#Eve online - if you have the patients this game is for you , ekonomy , pvp , pirates , even poker ! this game has it all but its slow as hell , u have to wait like 200 days to learn to drive big ship ...

those are games i recommend to try , but i warn you , you will compare it to wow and you wont find anything good like wow :)

Well I will be honest with you. You ruined yourself. WoW, even with all its faults, is still the best MMO on the market by far. I think what you will find is a lot of other MMOs are either based on the older, arguably inferior Everquest model or blatant clones of WoW. And what will happen is you are comparing five years of Blizzard polish (often considered the best in PC gaming) to in a lot of cases years of half hearted attempts by other companies to keep the core players playing these older MMOs. I think you will realize, just as I did, that if you are going to pay to play a game you should pay to play the best. And the best is WoW.

But since you are asking advice for something that doesnt resemble WoW, I would recommend Everquest 2 or City of Heroes. I personally couldnt get into either but they are different from WoW. If you wait a while, there is AION (not sure how that one will turn out), Champions Online (made by the people who made City of Heroes) and Star Wars: The Old Republic (Im waiting on this one myself).

I could rag on WoW for hours but I will resist that urge. I recommend you try GuildWars. Especially if you are strapped for cash, since there is no monthly fee. One things is that it's best to know people who already play it to party with since the game is instanced and can get a bit lonely at times. The graphics are beautiful and the story is interesting (unlike WoW, which has no story). Plus the ability to combine any of the character class abilities is very unique and there's lots of experimenting to be done.

He already tried Guild Wars.

And did you really say WoW has no story? Did you play any of the Warcraft games before you played WoW? Did you pay attention to the quests and instances? WoW has a lot more story than most people realize. It has almost a Silmarillion-like history if you pay attention. Just so you know, thats a Lord of the Rings reference.

He said he wants something different from WoW. As we all know, LotRO is a pretty blatant WoW clone.

Yeah, I have to agree... WoW is a world itself. A world with his own story and history. Most people do not see the true story and don´t realize the history.
When you play the game, and follow each quest, movie and truely take the time to learn your character... only then you understand why the game is the best.

But other then that... i have been playing it for more then 5 years. i need a change (or life as some people might call it ^^)

Guildwars i already tried. a very cheap clone, bad gameplay and way to short. To much PvP based.
Final Fantasy is cool, but credit card is required.. and i do not have and don't want a credit card.

so yeah, i'll have a look at all the other games mentioned above.. I'll let you know :-P

If you're into the lore at all, I also suggest LOTRO. It has an amazing landscape, great community, and just a sense of laid back playing for fun. I tried the trial a year ago and didn't really get into it, but a few months ago I tried again, played a bit longer, and it grew on me.

To be honest, Guild Wars, Age of Conan and Warhammer aren't as fully open as WoW that's one major gripe I had with each of those, however they are still decent games. I've never played Eve Online but it's also reccomended by a good amount of people. Final Fantasy 11 is decent but I don't think the game is maintained very well any more. I also didn't like the combat in the game due to the mechanics of running up to a mob and initiating combat instead of just doing things right there and then. But FF is a full MMO like WoW with an open world. I loved Planetside too back in the day but that was way back before WoW and the game has really aged now.
