Hey guys, I need to get a decent mouse, got any advice on the dpi etc., or, any features that generally considered mandatory? Further, if you wanna recommend a specific mouse please do. Cheers. stupid_toasterim using the powerlogic alien G9 mouse because it looks so damn cool and stylish....other than that i bought it for fun...and its 6000 dpi if you wanna know...other than that i know nothing about which gaming mouse is the best...
Razer DeathAdder is nice, great for gaming, good button placement and 2k dpi.
Logitech mx518 is a good and sturdy mouse, and would probably be more suited to your purposes (laptop, potential for travel etc.) and is cheaper than the DeathAdder.
Mine is logitech G5.
It appears they may not make this model anymore, but i'm sure Logitech has similar ones out. I've found the 2 mappable side buttons extremely useful in countless games. Also, the DPI changer on those middle buttons has been useful to change the mouse speed in several games where certain activities (sniping for example) might scroll too slow or too fast temporarily.
Extra buttons on a mouse are a big plus, even more so if you can map them to custom commands or keystrokes or even macros. They can be used for particularly cumbersome key bindings in games and also for simple conveniences in applications like web browsing.
High DPI isn't particularly important. I'd say a mouse with a max DPI between 2000 and 3000 is perfect. I use a maximum of 3000 DPI, but if you think you can handle something higher than that, go for it. On-the-fly adjustable DPI can come in handy sometimes, e.g. for sniping in FPS's or for making fine adjustments or selections in graphics editing.
Polling rate is another term thrown around with gaming mice and refers to how many times per second the mouse pointer is updated on the screen. Most mice have a 125Hz polling rate, which equates to 8 milliseconds of lag time between each pointer update. Simply put, a higher polling rate means smoother mouse movement, which is mainly useful for higher DPI settings as it helps with precision.
My mouse is in my sig, the Logitech G500. It's a fantastic mouse and I highly recommend it, but if you're looking for something cheaper that's understandable as well.

Yeah i have one of the older Deathadder (Voodoo edition) RED Tribal face instead of snakes.
1800dpi (works great) at 1680x1050, or even 1920x1200/1080 1800dpi is (fine) (of course higher dpi is usually better, but only really noticable on higher resolutions.) W
Also has a super high polling rate, which results in literally only 1ms response time. (which is fantastic)
