hey guys, so im getting a new laptop for college and i need your advice. it needs to be portable so i can take notes and such so ill be getting a 15"

ime leaning towards the 15in alien ware laptop. 9800, core duo 2.4, 4 gigs ram, and 500gigs hard drive space. how does that sound? are there better comps than alien ware for gaming laptops?

My advice: "gaming notebook" = oxymoron.

Ignoring that, Alienware is generally considered overpriced. If "taking notes" is all you need to do, I would suggest getting a netbook. Save the extra money and add to it when you can to put it towards building a solid gaming desktop.

no taking notes is all i need for school. i still want to be able to play games. to clerify that statement, i was looking at a mac for the video/music software because i do alot of that stuff. but i also play a ton of games so i wanted one that did both, it also needs to be portable because when i write i like to go to coffee shops and stuff.so i thought that an alien ware with vegas and fruity loops along with steam would satisfy all of that stuff.

as for being overpriced i can get that rig for about 2100 wich seems totally reasonable. but im no expert.

it may "seem" reasonable, but it's really not at all. This is what i reccomend; for the gaming laptop get this little gem;

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=QG5NOO3WGRW4TKC4D3GVAHI?skuId=9173262&type=product&id=1218044029168

and then get this netbook(just the one i like, but you can choose your own):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220368

You get the best of both worlds, for alot less.

Hope i helped

personally if i was going to a LAN party id rather lug my desktop. i can show off more performance wise, and visual impact and intimidating and impresive looks are as important as performance

your looking in the wrong place then. Dell has the current King of gaming Laptops;

the XPS 1730.

it has SLI 9800GT'S.

Heres the link:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dycwm53&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=13&kc=productdetails~xpsnb_m1730

I'm 99% possitive that this is what you want.

SLI in a notebook just seems silly to me. If I were picking out a "price is no object" notebook for my everything use today, it would be one of these two:

Sager NP9280

Sager NP5797

Good setup for a 15" I don't know about alienware though. It tends to cost more than it should.

I'd just get a cheap laptop and build a proper gaming pc.

Get an Asus W90

Core 2 Quad 2.0 GHz
ATi Radeon 4870 x2 graphics w/ 1 GB GDDR3 (no GDDR5 unfortunately)
6 GB of DDR2-800 SRAM

It's a beast and a very good price for that kind of performance. If you're looking for something much cheaper get a G50 series Asus like mine. You can get em for around $1000, or for even less get the MSI GX635 with a Core 2 Duo 7350, 4 GB DDR2-800, and a Radeon 4670 w/ 512 MB DDR3 VRAM for only $749, a very nice deal if you're looking for something that's not top of the line, but no slouch either. Just check Newegg, all these models I mentioned are on there.
