Hi guys, I'm planning on building my first gaming rig, and I was wondering if I could have some pointers from the more tech savvy around here :)

I'm not completely retarded with computors, nor am I amazing, but I do have some knowledge of what's required.

I'm hoping to build a rig that's able to run the majority of todays games on high settings, but I don't really want to go on a spending spree on excessively powerful components.

I've been told by a friend that this computor, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155472 would be good with begin with, although I plan to not use that version of Vista as my OS, my friend will be giving me an optimized version for gaming, and I do I trust his judgement, although further advice would be much appreciated.

I'm also planning on getting an ATI Sapphire HD 4670 512mb graphics card, is this a good choice for my price range? (the most I'm willing to spend on a card is about £100

The monitor I'd like to use, is a 26" Bush hdtv (which I will also hook up my 360 and PS3 to) as it has a PC input, the reason for this is because by just buying that, I will save about £200 on a monitor I'd have to buy as well.

If I missed anything, I'll update later, I'm a bit too tired to be posting this now, but ah well.

Thanks for any input.

Sapphire HD 4830 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card

Why not? It's twice as good as your HD 4670 and is within your budget range. Happy gaming!

That computer is a dual core. I would highly suggest getting a quad core it will even cost less if you get a phenom x4. More and more games and applications are going to be using quad cores so you might as well get one and be future proof.

From what I seen on cost of loose parts you could get about $1000 in it real quick, I got a used one from Tiger Direct 2yrs ago it is an IBM with a P4 3mhz processor I only paid $249 I installed a Nevida5200 video card now they make an 8600 card which would be better I also installed 3 sticks of 3200 memory it had 2700 memory when i got 3200 runs faster I got the memory on sale for for around $80,I have no trouble with games running they also have good sales all the time you could check on E-Bay if you still want to build one they have parts to bid and buy who knows you might be low bidder an get a good buy I got some very good buys let me know how you make out good luck

recommendations here if you want a cheap system: phenom 2 920 2.8ghz get a decent motherboard with a 790GX chipset (this chipset has a built in discrete 3380 GPU which you can then use in hybrid mode with another GPU kinda like crossfire but so mcuh easier and not expensive but it will give a boost) 2-4GB of 800mhz RAM (667mhz and 800 are on the same price level so obviosuly get the higher might as well, DDR2 is cheap anyways so it wouldnt cost much to get 4GB instead of 2GB and will last you a long time) and i read through again and you using ebuyer LOL!! im not sure if you wanted the above advice on any other components but its there anyway as for your GPU you can squeeze more out of ebuyer for 100pounds http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151393 4830 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/147945 9600GT the 4830 will give you better performance over the 9600gt tho

also i know this copy of vista from your friend will be free but modified versions of windows AKA gaming optimized are not that great you will proibably notice no difference and it much be less stable, as well as security wise

Future proof? This is out of question.

Chances are he doesn't use any applications requiring quad cores, such as photoshop, video encoding, etc.

Don't even think about GTA IV as evidence that games are starting to ultilize quad core. That game works so well on quad cores because Rockstar didn't bother optimizing it for the PC's duo cores. Besides:

The monitor I'd like to use, is a 26" Bush hdtv (which I will also hook up my 360 and PS3 to) as it has a PC input, the reason for this is because by just buying that, I will save about £200 on a monitor I'd have to buy as well. sl4y4

...Now that I got that out of the way, Duo Cores will still be mainstream until about DX11. They perform flawlessly on nearly all of today's games and rarely do they bottleneck. Your Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 is a fantastic CPU, and should last you for a very long time despite what every other quad-core fanboy will tell you.

The max amount I'm willing to spend is probably around 400 to 500 quid, and I'm buying most of the components from ebuyer.

Ok, well that desktop I was going to buy is out of stock :\

So unless it gets back in stock soon, I'll be buying all the components seperately.

*EDIT* I've been mooching around ebuyer (I'll either buy my stuff from there or from a store) and I've come up with some more components, can anyone tell me if this is any good?

Graphics Card - ATI Sapphire 4830 512mb GGDR3 Dual DVI HDTV out PCI-E

CPU - AM Athlon 64 X2 5400+ 2.8Ghz socket AM2 L2 1mb

HDD - Seagate ST3500320AS 500 Gb HD SATA II 7200rpm 32mb cache

Keyboard - Razor Lycosa UK gaming keyboard USB

I now need :

CPU cooling

Motherboard

Sound card

Power Supply

and Case

Any suggestions?

Oh and as for the RAM, I would prefer to get 4gb of it, but am unsure what brand to buy, could anyone help me out a little please?

*sorry for reposting the same message, my firefox went all screwy for some reason and wouldn't display it*
