Hi, could you tell me if these specs would be any good for running newer games (i play older games aswell).

  • 1 x 120mm Standard Case Fan
  • AMD Athlon II x2 245 2.9GHz Dual Core CPU
  • Standard Heatsink & CPU Fan
  • 1GB Kingston DDR2 Complimentary Upgrade To
    2GB Kingston PC6400 800MHz DDR2
    Ram
  • 250GB 7200rpm SATA II Hard Drive
  • 24x Dual Layer DVD +/- Rewriter
  • Integrated Graphics
  • Integrated 5.1 Channel Audio
  • Standard 450W PSU

I was going to change the integrated graphics card to my nvidia 9600 gt, but should i change the psu to say 500W? Also I was thinking of leaving the RAM, 2 gig seems to be enough. Thanks, Sean

That is roughly $390USD. Hmmm, I wouldn't do it. That same ammount of money could get you a better set up if you build your own, especially since you already have the graphics card.

This is all assuming you don't pay more than we pay here for our components, and if that isn't the case then maybe it is a good deal.

It probably will, but due to my bad luck and the fact im not confident enough to build my own i would prefer to buy a system prebuilt. Can you just tell me please, is the processor quite fast? I believe it is, but i know little about dual core processors. Thanks again, Sean

processor ok but a built in gfx card is useless for games your 9600gt would be far better. Also 2gig is fine for xp but prob need 4gig for win vista or 7. the 450w power supply should be fine.

Sorry for another noob question, but as the graphics is "integrated", does that mean i could have problems changing it with my nvidia? Would the integrated graphics card have driver software i would need to uninstall before i upgrade? One more thing, i heard win 7 is actually pretty much as fast as xp, so surely 2 gig would be more than enough? Thank you Wurd, Sean

Win7 is a more bulky OS than Xp ever was, but not quite as bad as Vista. 2 gigs will be fine to run it and play games yes, but it may become a problem in the future. Ram is easy to upgrade though and you van get more cheap when you need it. Integrated graphics eman that there is a dedicated chip on the motherboard, and no it won't be a problem installing a replacement at all.

EDIT: That CPU isn't bad, it's pretty much a phenom II without the L3 chache and runs very cool, can be overclocked easy.

^Thanks for your helpful reaply, here is a link of an even better deal http://www.thepcogroup.co.uk/computers.php?computer=3&custombuilt=35 I think that is really, really good value for money, same processor, same sort of specs plus i chose a nice case for it (im assuming the fans come pre installed with the case right?). The computer i posted above ended up becoming £160 i think when i actually bought it

The only thing is, i would rather keep the 2 gig of ram, but do you recommend i ask for 4 gig instead? If it will affect performance on win7 then if i have enough money i could get 4 gig instead of 2

I would certainly recommend 4GB for windows 7. 2GB would be ok, but you will definitely notice the difference betweeen 2 and 4GB.

RAM is really expensive right now. I'd stick with 2gb for now and then wait for a deal to come along and upgrade. Also, I think that's actually a pretty good deal. You might be able to get all those components for cheaper and build it yourself, but I'm not sure you could get all the components AND get a Win7 license for that price.

No no, i think there was some confusion here. Windows 7 will run just fine on 2 gigs of RAM and can play games. Most games don't require that extra memory, but some greatly benefit. 2 gigs is still very game worthy and will also keep the OS stable and fine. The only reason I have so much RAM in my machine was back in the day I could get a 4 gig set for $43 with free shipping...so I thought "What the hell" and got 8 gigs. I barely ever use that much anyway, only when I'm running multiple operating systems at the same time for school stuff on VM-ware and Virtual Box.

Back on topic, if you already have an OS (winxp) then go ahead and stick with it, it will save you money and it will be supported for a while. You can always get Win7 later in the future along with a few upgrades in time.

Yeah but it's pretty easy. Once you get the OS installed and have all the settings in place I suggest making a full system backup and don't be connected to the internet. Then go ahead and install some AV software and a firewall. From there you can start installing your drivers, at least enough to get an internet connection going. Go ahead and do all the windows updates. After you are up to date just use the CDs and install the rest of your machines drivers. They should be these executables and most of the process should pretty much be automated. Just a few clicks here and there.

Lol, i love my system, i'll be honest its not flawless (does lock up at times), but it runs quick, just a shame when im gaming it struggles on games that arent even that new. Im better off buying a new system anyway, i just hope it will run like my dell has :P

With those sort of specs you really won't be able to run many of the new games coming out, at most you'll just run them on low detail

integrated means the gfx card is built-in to the motherboard and usually far less powerful than andedicated gfx card. However nearly all motherboards come with a PCI-E slot that allows you to add your own card. Once inserted into the slot and powered your motherboard will detect the new card and switch the integrated one off automatically, if it doesnt you usually can do it manually in BIOS. Win7 is as fast as WinXP but needs more memory to run at the same speed. Windows XP was designed years ago for computers with 256MB mem so 2000MB (2gig) is more than enough mem for it. Win7 is designed to run well with 2gig but this may be a little under powered when running games so 4gig is recommended. With 2gig on win7 you will notice games, levels take longer to load and shut down and will use the hdd more.
