I use a 50 inch plasma (panasonic TC-P50ST30 1080p 3D) for gaming on my PS3, so I want to use it for the computer too. The computer is being built with the idea that Elder Scrolls: Skyrim will be played on the highest settings. I realize the highest resolutions are on the smaller computer monitors,I just like playing on the big screen HDTV from the couch. With that in mind, I've had two recommendations on video cards on a separate forum. One suggesting the GTX 590 and another suggesting 2 superclocked GTX 570's SLI. The reviews from tom's hardware seem to indicate that 2 570's is way to go. Any opinions would be helpful, as I am not very knowledgeable on the subject.

thanks

id just get a single 580. the 590 and 670 SLI have two faults that both recommenders probably forgot. compatibility.

dual gpu's still arent really that wellr ecieved in a gaming market. as a result alot of games lack support in fact its somewhere near the 85% mark of all games DONT dual gpu support. and nvidia and amd have both been left holding the phone and needing to erect makeshift support systems for them. themselves and the results are meh at best.

sli suffers basically the same problem that dual gpu's like the 590 do. they also take up more space, use more power and make more noise and heat. sup cut back and get the 580.

now for my reasoning. to date NO game @ launch has needed the best single-gpu card money can buy and i doubt highly skyrim is going to go about doing that. even @ 1080p. perhaps @ 2560p but i highly doubt your tv has support for that since its an hdtv (meaning 1080p support or lower.

use the extra cash to beef up your cpu & get a core i5 2500 or 2500k. my reason this is 2011 man. heck tablet has tri core's these days. there is 0 excuses available NOT to have a quad core these days. unless your building a pc for someone with nothing to do but wordprocess or document generate in general. as a quad core is that essential.

heck given the choice betwen a core i3 2300 and a phenom I X4 id probably sitll take the phenom I despite being significantly weaker. as there isnt an excuse to go dual core anymore. their that vital for every day computing.

i was also gonna go with a 590 but got a 570 instead. and its great! i also play on 52" hdtv! bad company 2 and crysis look and play great at 1080p with x4 aa and everything else at max settings... so yeah id just get a single card for now if i was u... either a 570 or 580 u can always add another later when theyre cheaper! btw get the i5 2500k instead of the i3

i was under the impression that the i-5 2300 that i listed was quad-core. i originally had the i-7 2600k on there, but was told i didn't need that much for a gaming build.

the i3 series is and will always be 2 core cpu's not quad core.

the core i5 2400, 2500 or 2500k are much better value for your dollar the 2600k is overexcessive for gaming. but its not like a happy medium doesnt exist lol.

Up your cpu to a i5-2500k. If you have to becuase of budget down your ram to 4gb and get a p67 board, as the features of a z68 dont warrant the extra spending. A 580 would do for now, but in the future when you want extra gpu power buy another 580.

sounds good, thanks for the advice.

i'll upgrade to the i-5 2500k and go with the gtx 580. is there much difference between the gtx 580 and the superclocked version?

sort of the superclcoked version is more or less the fan favourite due to its cooler running design. but your call really if you think the cooler running less nois card is worth it.

I love my two 6970s, but yeah, multi-GPU requires you to be able to tolerate a lot of headaches. Also, I would definitely advise against a dual GPU card like the GTX590 or HD6990. I had a 5970 until a few weeks ago that I couldn't stand anymore because of all the driver issues and the fact that you can't disable crossfire on a dual GPU card (which is important because there are some games, like Fallout NV, that go crazy if they're run in CFX/SLI). If money is no object, I'd recommend the GTX580 as it's the best single GPU on the market. If you don't mind lower performance in exchange for saving $150 then go with the 6970.
