Yep, really, just go to a friend's house and try it out! That is the best way to find out if you like a game before buying.

Homeworld, definately. (I like both, but I love Homeworld!)

For single-player, I'd take Homeworld, but for multi-player, probably Age of Empires. So... either

Both were good but AoE2 was the better game. For some reason the game took more skill to master eventhough it worked around a rock-papper-scissors concept. Each civilization felt completely different even when most units were shared between civilizations. I play AoE2 from time to time and its a better game.
