CPU-Z

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Look under (Mainboard/Ghrapic interface)

It will say your max supported transfer rate, If your card is faster it will work but only run at that speed.

If you really have a 2X slot, a 4/8x card probably wouldn't fit; good thing, too, since AGP 2X operates at 3.3V while 4/8x operates at 1.5V.

But I doubt that you have a 2X slot, since that's really old technology (1998-1999).

It's probably a 2/4/8x card.

A 4/8x ONLY card would NOT work in a 2X slot. It wouldn't even fit, as I said above.

I am at work right now. I will have to check when I get home.. I was just wondering cause I have a geforce 4 in it now and the fabn stopped working on the card. So I am affraid that the card will overheart and break. So I was looking at cards on newegg.com and i saw a gefore 6800ex or the FX5200 for a good price. It said on the specs that they are both 4x/8x and I was wondering if I get one if it will work. I think the slot is 2x/4x but I am not sure. I just wanted to know your thoughts

Its probably a 4x, I upgraded my Geforce4 to a FX 5500 and then to a 7600gt and both fit... I would recommend against getting any of the FX series though, they suck

(My computer is 5 years old, so its unlikely that unless your computer is older that it would be a straight 2x slot)

The FX5200 is a horrible card, but will work in a 2X slot, since it's a 2/4/8X card. Besides, if your PC only has 2X agp, anything faster than the FX5200 would be bottlenecked anyway.

The 6800 is a much better card, but will only work if your board supports at least 4x AGP. There may be a few 2/4/8x capable 6800 cards around, but the vast majority of them are keyed for 1.5v 4/8x operation only.

I built the computer about 2 years ago, and if i remember the chip is an AMD Athalon 2000. I just cant remember the board specs. So I am thinking at the time is was a newer board so i dont think it would have a 2x slot agp. it would be at least a 4x or 8x..

Actually, a "2X" would be AGP1, and the slot has an interrupter in it that prvents the AGP3 cards (8X) from fitting. There were once dual-current cards that fit into either AGP1 or AGP2, so were 2X or 4X. If there was a way to force one or the other, AGP1 Card or AGP1 MB slot, to fit its AGP3 descendent, there would be problems with one, the other, or both, from mismatched current rates.

AGP1 was 3 Volts, AGP2 is 1.5 Volts, and AGP3 is 0.8 Volts. Besides CPUz, which is a good, basic utility, there are a couple of more extensive full system component inventory programs. Belarc is one, and the AIDA32 / Everest Home program is the other. Everest itself these days is not free to download, but the older two versions remain available from Major Geeks.

All of nVidia's FXes were very factually, truthfully, awful junk. Avoid any of them like plague.

Two of my friends using that card since 2 years, no problems

BTW

I'm using a P3 550MHz (That has a AGP 2X slot) with GeForce 4 MX 440 (Card is 4X). It isrunnig @ 2X

Go here. Read.

It's an absolute disaster of a piece of trash. No exaggeration, no opinion. It's a real FACT.

Then you'll have no trouble. A 2-year old PC would most likely have 8X AGP (even PCI-E was available 2 years ago).

The FX 5200 is no gaming card by any standards, but I have one in my old HP PC and it is still chugging along. I can run Dawn of War on max settings with shadows set on low at 1280x1024 at like 20 FPS. I have some good times with that card as well as some frustrating ones.

There is too often a tendency to defend a bad buying choice as if it was a spouse you had married while on a drunken binge, but since your religion forbids divorce as well as murder, you pretend you want to stay married. There is no defense possible regarding that awful abortion. Even the atrocious Radeon 9550 is better than a Lowest quality FX, right up to the 5700 LE. Past that, the FXes are still foul waste, but not as foul as the 9550.

nVidia as much as admitted their mistake when they replaced the FX 5800 on their production lines with more GF 4 Titanium CPUs while retooling to create the 5700, 5900, and 5950. I know about their mistake through expensive personal experience, having owned several FXes. I think, if you want to cover my shipping expenses, plus $25, I still have an usused FX 5200 in the junk pile here readily available to whatever fool wants it that much.

You are REALLY limiting your options with that tiny budget! Today's games call for $100 cards, actually. But if you are going to be satisfied playing older games, there is a Radeon 9600 XT at Newegg for less than $50, after a MIR of $15:
