XFX 8800GT @ 640mhz + Q6600@2.40 + P5K-e Wifi + OXZ 2go @ 800mhz, Case Antec 900,(everything is stock, i don't overclock).

Since a couple of days i've noticeda pretty bigfps drop while playing my games for more than 5-10min( oblivion, cod4 ). So i opened my case to check if my PC was overheating, and there i couldn't belive what i saw : the fan on my GPU wasn't even working !!!!

I don't know how to check the temp of my GPU, but let me tell you it's pretty hot, i can't leave my hand on it more than 5 sec.... I don't know why the fan stopped working, but i did. It used to work correctly though, i got my new PC 3-4 weeks ago and never had any FPS problem, and i remember the first day i got my PC,i opened it, and i clearly saw the fan on the 8800GT working correctly.

Now i don't know what to do, there isn't much to do, i can only drop a call to the guy who built my PC, and fix the problem or change the card, i think i have a 1 year warranty, WELL I HOPE I DO !!!! 300 $%?%$?$ bucks !!!! Sry, im a little pissed off.

Anyway, do you think my GPU could be permanently damaged ?i used my PC a lot in the last couple of days, while my GPU was overheating and i didn't know it. I did notice a big FPS drop, but my PC never crashed though.

Also, has anyone got the same prob with a 8800gt ??

Relax your card won't die, but you should try and run a game, then see if the fan starts spinning. Also install revatuner and check your temps, you can also up you fan speed with it. If your fan is broken you should call your vendor and get it fixed.

The answer is simple. Your fan needs to be fixed.

Just contact XFX and get a replacement. Also, XFX gives a lifetime warranty I'm pretty sure...

XFX should replace your card if the fan is not working, you can also get a good cooler like Zalman VF 1000

Either get it replaced which XFX should most definitely do or get a new aftermarket cooler.

A very cheap alternative will be getting an Artic Cooling Accelro S1 + Turbo Module/92mm Fan.

Also, i have heard there's a ''old'' 8800GT with a smaller fan, and a most recent 8800GT, with a bigger fan. How can i know which model is my XFX 8800GT ?

Your 8800GT most definitely has the smaller fan. As the bigger fan applies to the 256mb module only and only in the next batch of 8800GT(mid Jan)will manufacturers have install the bigger fan on the 512mb version.

My 8800GT keeps overheating when playing Crysis on high settings, once or twice I have had the system automatically shutdown due to GPU overheating. So now I have to manually adjust the fan settings to run it on 100% while playing games, then I turn it back to automatic fan settings when finished.Does anyone know whether running the fan at 100% for long durations might damage the fan or the card?
