Some modder went to town on Aliens CM after launch and has overhauled a lot of the visuals, the result is something much greater looking than the default vanilla version and it really begs the question of how these games get released in those states when modders can fix it in no time. It was the same with Dark Souls

Probably quite a few reasons. For 1 the game developers are tasked with many things I would assume and throughout the development cycle you may be tasked to do different things. Its not so much a "you work on just this" its more "work on this for a bit, then work on this later... oh by the way I want this done by lunch time". Also its very easy to judge someones attempt at something when they more than likely working horrible hours and who just cant be bothered anymore. Sounds bad but I hear more horror stories about game development than rosey ones. Speak to any developer and they will more than likely say "Yeah its horrible but worth it" which to me would emply. They dont like it at the time, but on reflection they appreciate their job. Ultimately this efffects their output ability. Finally, its easy to improve something that someone has already done. Its not so easy trying to make it in the first place. Its why all mods can make games look loads better, I can't think of a single game where no mod has improved visuals. By what you are reffering to suggests that all modders are vastly better than those doing the actual development... for every single game title. To me, it just comes across as modders are talented people who can improve what they are given, however very few mods that I have ever come across actually make great games themselves. Usually they are fun to mess about with, but wouldnt make it on their own.

Installed it last night and there is a noticeable improvement. I highly recommend it. Also no fps hit as far as I can tell.

squishy, all you said it's obvious and also irrelevant in this case, no random guy can simply create a mod to make a multimillion $ game look visibly better on the day of that game's release without making the developers look pathetic, yeah development is hard, yeah those guys get stressed for years and work till late for long periods of time especially towards release, etc, etc, but it simply does not matter, there is no decent excuse for this, not one, if a random guy can do it in hours, I'm sure a developer actually working on the game can alter the parameters in minutes.

A few hours is not hard work, a few hours after years is not an outrageous thing to ask for, a few hours after years do not require some outrageous funds to fuel, a few hours my man, I don't think a few hours warrant the life story of gaming development or arguments like "as if you can do it better if you were in their shoes", we're consumers, not developers and a few hours for something like this is a bad joke and a PR disaster for the extremely unstable Gearbox (they have more PR failures than game successes).

This mod won't fix the bad animations and awkwardly scripted events.

Instead of playing the game (which I have on my PC and have no even ran yet) I watched Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 last night back to back. Haven't seen them in years.

I did a ton of tweaks myself. Doubled all the memory pools, doubled physics calls and bunch of other things.

Now I have dynamic lights, more steam, good looking explosions and better looking AA/textures.

Nice to finally get some MSAA. I was doing my own tweaks (despite barely understanding what a lot of it meant in the ini files :P) but I couldn't change much.

I have the mod now and the game definitely looks better, but at the end of the day it's still a forgettable glitchy mess....that I am having SOME fun with.

This. I don't care how good it looks. The game play seemed as boring and as tired as any COD.

Mods cannot fix everything that is horribly wrong with this sh*tpile of a game.

Can make a turd look better I guess but in the end its still a turd..

IMO the game picked up about half way. Co-op really was the saving grace, as well as playing on PC. I'd still only give it between a 5.5 and 6 based on SP alone. Too many bugs/glitches and general gameplay issues. Some of the levels were really bland/short, and of course there's the whole gameplay taking backseat to narrative thing. (Can't progress until the NPCs are done talking and press the button/decide to move.) Turning up the difficulty really helped keep it interesting.

The mod made the last few levels really shine visually.  Still needs some high-res textures though.

There are far more fundamental problems with this game beyond it's look. The broken A.I. and lack of atmosphere for example...

Graphics ID and CPU info.

Update and edit settings in...

Documents - My Games - Aliens Colonial Marines - PecanGame - Config - PecanCompat.ini

Tweak

Documents - My Games - Aliens Colonial Marines - PecanGame - Config - PecanEngine.ini

Done... Took me around 4 hours changing and testing settings.

You can also play around with the other .ini files.

I tweaked some settings but it doesn't really change much visually.
