Well I was looking to upgrade my display now, but then I saw this thing.

http://www.tomsgames.com/us/site/flash_videos/alienware_curved_display.html

I wounder how much this thing is going to cost? I could see it as much asmid-lineHDTV when it finally comes out, and is it even worth it?

Well it's only aimed for hardcore enthusiasts. Look at the resolution, Crysis and other modern games would eat any videocard alive playing them at the native resolution of the monitor. If you want this display be prepared to get a SLI or Crossfire setup going on. I can see this thing easily hitting the $1500 mark so it's not going to be cheap.

It,s a really cool display, and you will probably need a huge desk to put it on :P, but I think it will be expensive compared to good adn hiqh quility LCD screens, also I dont think it will be comfortable for anything else then gaming, imagine going to the desktop.

The resolution is 2880x900. It would kill any computer without a Crossfire or SLI setup. Unless you're okay with running games at medium settings. But who buys a monitor like that to play games on anything other then high/max settings?

For what this will cost, you could get an Apple 30" display and STILL get a higher resolution and STILL come out ahead in price. And of the two, I'd rather have the 30" - it's a lot more likely to fit in my room, I can watch 1080p content on it without rescaling it, and be immersed like nobody's business.

He said it was seamless in the interview but i could clearly see where the panels connected to each other. It didnt looke curved at all. Just like you molded several regular screens together in a sorta curved orientation.

More realism and immersion. Even on a regular widescreen you have major tunnel vision on fps games. This will eventually become popular and be a full 180 degrees.

In a few years this will probably be popular with the hardcore types. And they should be seamless by then, unlike this piece of crap Alienware is trying to sell.

Then when we hit photorealism in graphics, higher resolutions and wider screens will be all thats left to keep people upgrading.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. But as others have said, you'd need a heck of a rig to actually drive that sucker...

Even whatever they were playing in that video (Crysis..?) looked like it was hitting maybe 5 or 10 FPS here and there. Not a smooth gaming experience. And with a display with that kinda field of view, you'd probably just get motion sick!

I've got a 24" LCD monitor. Do I really need anything bigger than that?

Answer = nope.

I would have said about a grand at least, but combine that with the fact it's made by Alienware and you're looking into somewhere in the regions of half a million. Not exaggerating.

Its a glimpse of the future.

This greatly illustrates the tunnel view most of us are currently gaming in:

The Alienware guy said they're was nothing else like it on the market, that's a lie. I saw another monitor just like it on the CES live show.

It looks great but I bet it costs an arm and a leg.
