Hey all.

I was wondering what people thought of the alienware M11x... It seems surprisingly good for a laptop at its price...

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/alienware-m11x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

Is it worth it? And if so- how long will it stay worth it? (Since if I do get it- it won't be very son I don't think)

And of course- has anyone tested Crysis on it? :P

Actually, you can. You can grab a barebones laptop (motherboard, screen etc) and add in your own components, but the price benefit is hardly worth it.

I just literally bought that baby for 762.93$ :) and i bought it with the core2duo not the pentium SU something something :)
:D only thing i could do in the future is upgrade RAM and HDD :D!!!
tbh it's really good for a notebook it's size.. if you want a notebook with good battery, lightweight and the occassional game-on-the-go I'd recommend it. :)
only downside is it doesn't come with a cddrive.. although my previous netbook (HP311) didn't have one.. so it's not a biggy!

if you want a deal right now.. let me know ASAP. cuz i know a coupon that expires tomorrow.

If you're curious here's a review

I'm going to get one too but i'm going to wait and see if they are going to put an i5 or i7 in it. I'm sure they will but who knows when it will be.

I guess for me it depends on how much of a battery killer it is. If it only takes an hour off i'm ok with it but i'm sure it would take more then that.

well i've been crazily shopping for notebooks/laptops/netbooks recently.. and the best i've seen the i3 battery life is around 4 hours.. i'm guessing since the i5 might be a little more powerful.. it will lessen it too :o i guess its' not so bad overall.. one of my biggest wants in my notebook was battery life >_+ gotta survive GEOG 150 and COMP 282 somehow T__T

There are 18w i5 and i7 processors and i think the lowest for the i3 is 35w (I think) and the core2duo they have as an option right now is 10w. So there shouldn't be to big of decrease in battery life but no one knows till it happens.

I do not recommend Alienware at all. Theyre too expensive and are usually not built right. For the price you pay for those PCs, you expect to have a top-notch PC, but they usually are not.

Besides I do not recommend a netbook for a gaming PC. The screen's too small and is not powerful to run games well. You can probably find regular notebooks for around $700 with good enough specs to play games.

:? i got mine for 762$. that's not bad considering what it's packin :D if you didn't watch CES this year then you missed out on mx11..

IT IS NOT A NETBOOK

It's not a netbook, although it does rival such laptops. No it doesn't have an Atom, No it doesn't have a CD Drive but what it does have is a good processor and a good video card that has almost the same weight as a netbook and similar battery life. The idea of this alienware laptop is to have a simple game on the go machine and not it's hardcore alienware brothers. As for calling out Alienware "not built right" then I have no comment since I've never owned one. For the price this one came with and the details it has, it wasn't as bad as you're calling it.

and find me a good notebook that's light weight and has a smaller screen than 14" with good enough specs as this under 700$.

What mine is 15" where do you get this 17" nonsense ? 4 hours of battery life is enought for me and i get 12k in 3dmark06 thats double of that alienware. And i only paid $899 for my laptop which has a C2D P8700, Nvidia 260M GTX , 4 GB ram and 640 GB Harddrive.

So how big is it again? 11 inches? Awesome I say, badging an Alienware to showoff your techsavviness all while maintaning the size/weight of a netbook. I am sold if I had money for a portable device right now. The specs should suffice the resolution it runs at, netbook is the shetz nowadays anyways laptops are too big you look like a goofball if you had to carry it 24/7. Imo :P

7 pounds too heavy for you ? Anyways those are some garbage specs for that laptop good luck running any new games on that thing. Unless you like playing on low ? I got no problem carrying my laptop around, maybe theres something wrong with you health so why not get the m11x since its few pounds lighter.

I like where they are going with this, to me it is more of a portability thing here that can quickly attach to a monitor if needs be. If I had the cash on me right now I probably would order one and use it for LAN sessions ( yes people still LAN). I don't care if it can't play Crysis at super high settings or whatever I'm just interested in playing TF2 or Company of Heroes. The 335M GT is pretty impressive for what it can do, has 72 pipelines, 450MHz core clock, 1080MHz shader, 1066MHz memory. The only down size is that it's 1GB GDDR3 with a 128-bit bandwidth so the card will never fully take advantage of all that VRAM.

LOL  wow look at you guys go all defensive. Sensitive much? Just because I share my opinion on what I find too heavy doesn't mean I'm making fun of your toy. :roll:I was just curious as I'm still technically shopping. Geez.

I'm not looking for a gaming machine that I can carry around. I was looking for something portable and has good gaming capabilities. I'm sorry if I offended your e-go. That wasn't the idea  but thanks for the laugh

The Alienware M11x is an amazing piece of hardware. You need to accept it for what it is an 11 inch ultra portable that can play games. It's not a desktop replacement, it's not a M15x or a M17x. I've been hanging out for a netbook sized notebook with more grunt, I pre-ordered the M11x as soon as they were available. I got the following specs; Core 2 Duo SU7300, 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200RPM HDD, Bluetooth, etc.

What amazes me the most is the fact that they fit a GT335M, which whups the GT240M, into a 11" laptop. In that sense it's a pretty epic win.

7 pounds is way to heavy for a laptop, I own a 10pound inspiron 12 in laptop from 2000 awl. I hate it. Course 13 in is the biggest size i go for laptops, I had bought a 17in asus g2s laptop... worst mistake evah. Still gaming on a laptop isn't that interesting to me, if it multitasks very fast, and can play old games great, like quake3 then I'm all over it. My 1005ha netbook lags a bit on quake3.

I think I'm going have to agree here. I had a 15" 2004 Sony Vaio. It was like 10lbs and still quite big. Sold that in early 2009, and got a 17" gateway P6860FX. It was nice, not much bigger than my old sony size and weight wise, while obviously having 1,000x better hardware and bigger screen/res. But didnt take long for me to start wanting a either better laptop, or kinda smaller. Found the Asus G71 refurb for around 900, thought it was a good deal, but it was HUGE, much bigger than the gateway 17" was. I ended up returning it due to it having so many bugs and problems, plus the new big size was worry some(as im sure as time grew i would get tired of lugging the big thing around). Which got me thinking about maybe just getting a smaller laptop. Sure enough, i find a small Asus 14.1"(X83VP-A1) with the same CPU as the G71, but with a not so good gpu, but at least decent(4670m). After exhausting research, I decided to buy it. Just got it about 2 days ago now. And have to say its pretty nice, very light even if its 5.5lb(at least IMO since im so used to 9+Lbs laptops) , small while still quite powerful. I got it for about 770$ + bing cash back will bring it down to about $680. Its not the best, but considering how small it is, and I can still run TM with my tweaked settings at 100FPS. Its a nice laptop, still unsure if I'm going to keep it, it has a few minor quirks(keyboard sux, screen is a little weird on blacks, vent blows hot air out on right side, etc). So, in conclusion, my point is, having a big laptop doesnt hurt much if your only going to move it every now and then. But having a small one that is still capable of playing games decently seems to be the overall better choice, especially now that I'm getting first hand experience with it all.

I use a dell vostro, infact I am on one right now. 13.3 inches bought it last year. I mean I care about the cpu the most, not that much about the gpu. Dell vostro 1310, payed like 1100$, I think it was worth it. 2.1ghz c2d 4 gigs of ram 8400mgs 9 cell battery (lasts like 4 hrs) 13.3 inch is a plus. I was almost thinking of buying a Macbook 13.3 inches I mean they are very competitive at their price point, assuming your upgrade nothing. (They charge astronomical amounts of money for ram and such). Though I am not particularly fond of being associated with Mac users.

The lack of an optical drive had zero impact on my purchase. When I get the machine I'll back it up to the SOE server at work. If I ever need to reinstall I'll use PXE and Ghost. I purchase all of my PC games from Steam. All of my music has already been converted to digital files or was downloaded from iTunes. For me the M11x is a secondary machine, my main machine has the optical drives, etc. Mmm network transfer FTW. If I ever need an optical drive I'll use a USB external, but I seriously can't see that ever happening.

For the price, its pretty good. Howeverit doesn't have an optical drive. (CD or DVD drive) You'll end up usingSteam :).

It does get rather anoyying putting operating systems to USB, I mean if you do a lot of OS stuff like me. I mean putting a bunch of small distros of Linux or BSD to a usb gets old really fast, and when you boot from it, you have to mount stuff and well a usb thingy helps.

That's why I use PXE based network OS installs. :)

But that takes more work that needed for one install.

I can create a network based image of a HDD in around 15 to 30 minutes depending on the compression I use/HDD size. Dumping the image back on to that or another HDD can take between 5 to 10 minutes over the network. I use PXE, RIS, and Ghost Multicasting so I can actually image more than 1 machine at a time. Not that that matters with something a simple as just creating an image of the factory M11x HDD install. As for cloning HDDs directly that really comes down to the speed of the interface from 1 HDD to the other. Quick as using IDE/SATA/SCSI/SAS. USB = SLOW!

mm nice to know.. but it seems more a marketing ploy.. I feel silly.. I just looked up the two CPU's they were offering for this badboy..and performance wise.. they aren't so different.. so 100$.. for a little diference.. I don't know if that was worth the upgrade  we'll see
