Okay I'm going to buy a new laptop... And i have narrowed it down to these two choices..

http://store.apple.com/us_edu_492876/configure/Z0GH

MacBook Pro 15" plus 200 school discount

vs

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9383758&type=product&id=1218095797767

Alienware m17 17"

So both are the same price. Which one would be better for me? At the moment I am using adobe master suite cs3 to edit videos. Pc games I am looking forward to is Diablo 3 and Star Wars: The Old Republic

Definitely the Alienware, but even then, you could probably find a better computer somewhere.

what graphics card does the macbook come with? i can't see it specified anywhere

in any case, i bet the Alienware would still be the better choice... and even then, i bet you could find a better deal somewhere else quite easily, Alienware laptops are hideously overpriced.

I would go with the Alienware m17x. It has much better hardware, and I have been reading reviews on the new m17x and they all say the case is built really sturdy and well. The only brand I think of that would be similar would be a Sager Notebook, but they run just about the same price anyway. The best buy m17x takes a few hundred off compared to buying it directly from alienware for the same specs. Also I own a m15x and I love it, the 8800m GTX does really well with games and I could only image the GTX 260 being much better, not to mention there are two of them in that Laptop.

For pure game purposes the Alienware is much better than the macbook pro since those only come with a 9600 gt. The case is now alumium as well, so it might be a little heavier but the fact that it's much stronger than alienwares previous case designs. I have never had any problems with my m15x so I am impressed with it. As for using if for other programs the quad will help, but it clocks speeds are a bit slower. You can always upgrade the processor if you need to (newegg.com stocks laptop processors) and if you want to upgrade to the GTXm 280 later on as long as alienware is still stocking them you can buy the cards from them. You just won't be able to upgrade to a 300m series card though because of the differences between them and the 200m series.

Don't go with a MacBook Pro. I ended up getting one thinking I needed it for college, turns out I don't anymore so I'm selling it. While it's a very nice laptop it just doesn't have the performance I had hoped for. The aluminum body is amazing and the LED screen looks sharps, but that's really where it ends for me...I wouldn't advize getting a macbook pro...if you want a mac laptop go for one of the cheaper ones and build yourself a nice desktop computer for when you play games or whatever else.

I'm too lazy to look, but if you dig around on this forum you'll see plenty of good gaming laptops that are cheaper and have better specs than either the Apple computer or the alienware.

As far as laptops go your not going to find a "better" speced laptop for cheaper than the alienware. The cheaper laptops would be an asus or gateway but those only include a low clocked Core 2 duo and a 9800 gs or GTS, which the dual GTX 260's in the m17x are much more powerful. So in terms of power, no he's not going to find anything better for cheaper.

Lol why dont you get the new asus g51vt, 15.6 inch laptop.

it has quad core 2.0 ghz, Gtx 260m, 4gb ram, 500 gb and all of that for 1600 dollares, MORE REASONABLE THAN THE crappy alienware stuff you are buying.

oh and it has 2 year warranty and 1 year accidental included in price unlike rip off company alienware.

ryan where do you get that info.

OFF ALIENWARE WEBSITE!!!.

IF YOU GOT TO POWERNOTEBOOKS.COM

CUSTOME ASSEMBLED NOTEBOOKS, you can get notebooks twice the powerful of alienware and less than 20 percent price.

Don't have to get so angry dude lay off the caps, but I have never heard of powernotebooks.com and to be honest, I would buy the macbook before them mainly because I personally wouldn't buy from a company that I have never heard of before. I see they also sell Sager notebooks, but alot cheaper than pctorque or sager.com so I don't know on that one. Be aware of the people who buy from ibuypower.com usually end up getting shipped a piece of crap that was poorly put together. As for the relaible well known brands I know of would be Alienware, Dell, HP, Gateway, Asus and Sager. So out of those brands I would say that the Alienware or the sager would be the choice for for gaming. I own an m15x and the quality of the product is much better than most brands out their that I have seen (the only annoying thing is the sqeaky hinges on the lid) and the fact that the m17x is being reviewed as the best alienware notebook to come out. So personally I would rather buy from a company that has it's foot in the ground and won't dissapear tommorrow. Alienware and Dell make good laptops and they are not going away and ever since alienware got bought by dell, their laptops have gotten better. So he was asking between apple and alienware two well known companies. It's my opinion that I wouldn't chance that much money on something I have never heard of, I would personally spend an extra 300 dollars on something that has been proven to be a good product. You get what you pay for sometimes dude, not everyone wants to take a chance and blow 1600 dollars on something they are not sure if it's good or a piece of crap. The second thing is he can buy it from best buy which not only does that mean he could order it in store and check it out, he then has the option of going with the best buy warrenty and they are pretty good too. There is another good reason to go with alienware and that is because of dead pixels they don't charge you for dead pixel protection. Other manufactures such as sager charge extra money ontop of the warrenty to protect agaisnt dead pixels so the price evens out once apply this stupid policy. So once you apply that the prices end up really close.

The asus wouldn't be bad either, depends if he wanted a 17" or a 15.4" and the second 260 card.

This laptop will offer you more bang for your buck than either of the two listed, and should be more than enough for the games you listed.

Neither go to Sager, they seeem to do the best deals these days. Personally for a loptop i'ld get something cheap and light the only premium part i may want would be an SSD.

I am personally a huge fan of macs, and I would get that if I were you, but if all you are looking for is a good gaming laptop, I would go with something other than alienware (which is one of the only brands whiich is more overpriced than apple)
