I'm a real sci-fi nerd and love space ships and giant capital ships.

Eve Online *should* be a perfect game for me, but I find that I am getting scared off by its complexity every time I try to get into it.

I wrote a small post about it that you can check out:

My Ambivalent Relationship with Eve Online

Am I the only one who feels this way about Eve Online?

Maybe I'm just too damaged by all the "casual" games that we get nowadays.

I'm not scared off by the complexity.

The time commitments are simply too high when you can lose it all in a split second due to a poor connection.

Its not really that great, and as for losing everything unless your stupid enough to use all your isk on one ship and then lose said ship it won't happen.

You're definitely not the only one. EvE seems perfect for me, amazingly designed world with intensely complex gameplay, but the community for that is terrifying.

Eve always seemed like more of a excel spread sheet than an actual game to me...I never had the urge to get into it. I'd suggest checking out X3: Terran Conflict though, it's like a single player Eve.

How far have you gotten into the game prior to being 'scared off'

I hang out in the rookie channel once in a while and I find most people complain about the game being too hard to get into but none of them do any tutorials. They are definitely there for a reason...

Game is not difficult it just requires :effort: to do most of the more enjoyable things. Take PVP, even through you can pvp quite well in frigs/battlecruisers which takes a few days/weeks. The fact is unless you get extremely unlock you will end up spending a few hours just looking for targets and after that you will only have a few kills to show for it. The large battles with 200+ people are quite boring as its just involves looking up a target and pressing f1 over and over. That is the enemy actually brings a sup-capital fleet to the field and does not hot drop you with 100+ Super-Capitals which are unstoppable.

I also wanted to get into EvE, but the time requirements are just too high. Maybe once I finish school, I will look into getting into it, unless Archeage comes out or the Tera western publishers stop being such p*****s.

Not too long. Maybe around 5 hours usually.

I realise that it is entirely my own fault for not dedicating enough time to really dig into the game and just understand the systems.

But for some reason Eve Online just seems to be a lot more overwhelming in this regard than most other stuff I've played.

Oh, and I'm glad to hear that other people have pretty much the exact same feelings that I do ;)

You might want to give X3 Terran Conflict a spin, then. That game is very similar to Eve-Online in many areas except that you are alone. Unless you plot to be the leader of multiple Alliances, own 100 star systems and have 2500 pilots at your beck and call while fighting against other similarly-sized alliances, there are many other things and activities in Eve that don't really require the damnation of your soul and the blood of your firstborn son. And seriously, with just a bit of common sense, Eve can be as safe as the most carebear of MMOs.
