Am I the only who thinks ultra high pixel density is immensely overrated??

The buzz in the tech world seems to be HD smartphones and now the new ipad. The resolution of the screen seems to be such a big deal now.

To me even a 480x800 phone seems pretty sharp as well. What really matters is things like contrast, reflectivety, colors and motion smoothness.

LCD's still suck in 2 out of the 4 categories especially contrast. I have a nexus S SC-LCD version with 480x800 resolution. If I was given the option of either infinite blacks or HD resolution I would gladly take the former without a second thought.

The ipad 3 has a contrast of 870:1 according to anandtech. How the hell is that satisfactory?? How can something like that be called the best and greatest display in the world?? Dont get me wrong it's perfectly acceptable contrast, my nexus S and computer monitor have similar contrast as well but I dont go around calling them the greatest display ever even if they had millions more pixels.

The ipad 3 screen is brilliant because of the colour gamut.

Pixel density will always be important to a point. Just as you cannot really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 32" screen or smaller from most viewing distances, neither can you tell on a phone when you cram more pixels in on such a small screen at the average viewing distance.

Pixel density always matters up to a point, because it improves sharpness and clarity, but then it plateaus.

I also wouldn't say any one feature is more important than another; contrast, brightness, color, resolution, refresh rate etc. all work together to improve the image quality.

Obviously it's only useful up to a point, but it can make a big difference.

The 720p screen on my Nexus phone is pretty nice. Its very useful for viewing non-mobile friendly websites. Sure, the text is too small to read, but its well enough for glancing at info before zooming in.

Retina may be marketing drivel but I love being able to view content on a screen without really seeing the pixels. It gives me an e-ink type reading experience without the limitations of that format. Most smartphones and mobile devices have pixels large enough to count, and many more of those screens have incredibly visible grids around the pixels. Most newer phones aren't too bad offenders, but then you get something like the DSi XL which has a thick grid, and chunky pixels the size of sesame seeds on screen that you hold a foot from your face.

I can never see pixels on my nexus S which has fairly average pixel density compared to retina.

Who the f***** said the ipad 3 was the best display in the world????

The iPad 3 looks fantastic, but come on... 850:1 contrast is a joke, and you'll need more pixels than neccesary to make up for that low contrast.

Panasonics 4KHD 152" screen, Samsung Super AMOLED displays, Sony/LG/Samsung's OLED prototypes, The Pioneer Kuro KRP500-A, Sony XBR 960, Sony GDM FW900 etc would like a word with those who said iPad 3 = best display ever made /endrant

The iPad 3's display is being called the best TABLET display in the world. Not the best display. There is a HUGE difference there. That said, I would disagree and say the GTab 7.7's OLED display is better. The contrast is just so incredible. And the Super AMOLED HD display on the Galaxy Nexus is even better. The colors are over-saturated, sure, but it is looks so crisp and the contrast ratio gives the display "depth." It's hard to explain, but anyone who has used an OLED phone or watched TV on a Kuro knows what I'm talking about.

There are people that can though. I have personally never been sensitive to pixel density, so I'm with you on that. However, what is nice about higher pixel density is the gain in screen real estate. When you go back to a phone with a lower resolution, widgets and icons looks stupidly big.
