I play video games. I have been playing for the past one year. I would say I used to play maybe 3- 4 hours a day. Now maybe only 1-2. Ever time I do, my Parents always say, "Turn that damned thing off, your frying your brain and wasting your life!" Am I? Is it really a waste? It is fun isn't it? I'm wondering if I should stop. Or maybe I should just play less. What should my comeback be to them if they say that to me? I was wondering if I could get other peoples opinion on the subject. It would help me and be very interesting. If you do, thanks.

Turn off the TV when they are watching and repeat what they say to you about video games.

roulettethedog
This. Also, you can tell them when playing video-games, at least they know you aren't commiting crimes or anything else stupid.

Is playing video games a waste of time/life? YES! But so is watching movies/TV, playing board games, hanging out with buddies etc etc. Pretty much everything people consider "fun" is a waste of time. I chose to waste mine playing video games. As long as you're preforming your other duties, like studying and working, it's fine. If gaming starts ruining your life, and you know that you have an addictive personality and you can't balance things out, then definitely stop.

Tell them to describe how exactly it is frying your brain and based on their logic all entertainment is a waste of time so therefore give them the same response whenever they are entertaining themselves.

Hey dude, the choice is yours. Everybody got somthing to fall into deeply, that 's what you will recall when you want to think back your life. But i think you should play less since there are more wonderful things happening outsite

It is wasting your time, like everything else you might do every day, even school wastes your time at least a little (unless your school is special and it actually prepares your for what's out there, helping you intensely to develop your interests and ability). If you exaggerate it's even bad for your health, but it really doesn't matter as long as you're having fun and you're taking care of your health. Personally I haven't really watched TV for more than 6 years, I used to watch TV a lot before that, now it's an achievement if I get 2 hours every week, I'm pretty much always on the PC when I'm at home (especially these days due to health problems - that are not related to the PC :P), I learn on the PC, I play, I read, I listen to music, watch shows, etc, the only thing I do on a TV is to watch some DVD/BR movies once or twice a month.

actually studies have shown that video games does improve hand eye coordination and actually contrary to popular believe promotes socialization among peers 65% of the time...in most games where cohesion is necessary.

Playing video-games is a hobby, since when have hobbies = wasting life? And if playing a video game is wasting life then what constitutes as NOT wasting your life? Time goes by, and human life dwindles.. That is the process and it can't be stopped. Certainly NOT playing video game is not going to stop time, learning to play the guiter won't stop it - becoming president won't stop time either. Some might tell you to go and learn a new skill, because that's being productive and "learning" something. But you can't take anything with you when you're gone anyway, so why is it being productive? The only reason to learn a new skill is if you enjoy that skill.Spending time with family and friends is important but you don't have to stop playing video games to do that, 1-2 hours a day on a hobby is nothing. I would of personally told my parents you're being out of line by telling me not to enjoy my own interests (not telling you to do that just saying what I would probably say).

Everyone needs some "down time". No one is productive all the time, and as long as you don't take playing games to extremes, it's no worse or better than any other relaxation activity.

What a strange thread, and from such a new poster. I'm bewildered, I'm not quite sure how to take this or even respond to it. The first responder was correct in what you need to tell them. They're being stupid, or they feel you're losing sense of reality, but honestly reality is not reality TV as they're more than likely watching. So try to explain that to them.

They probably just don't get it, that's all. 1-2 hours a day is well within the healthy limit in my opinion. When your friends ask you out or wanna come over and you say no so you could play video games or surf the internet, that's when you should be worried.

Video games make me forget all the bad **** in my life. I'm aware that I'm going overboard, but they keep me sane.

So I'm not the most qualified person to answer you question, but IMO if you like doing something that doesn't hurt anyone (else :P), keep doing it.

Let me preface by saying that I'm sure you are a good child to your parents but, when your parents say, "Turn that darn thing off. You're frying your brain." What they are really saying is: 'This whole time I've been driving YOU to soccer practice, buying YOUR groceries, saving up for YOUR college I could've been playing video games, or retiring to Phoenix, or backpacking through Europe, or getting the band back together, or buying my own franchise, or launching my dream company with seed money that went to YOU!"

If you are an only child and your parents combined make six figures than I might be wrong. If you have brothers and sisters and your parents are in that "99 percent" with the rest of us than I'm probably right. Because what is hidden right under the surface of the American Dream is the fact that having kids sucks. We all got sold a bill of goods by the 'Leave it to Beaver' show that turned out to be BS.

There's a book called the "Happniess Equation" and some other studies beginning to open people's eyes a bit. Instead of being bummed about this very real, phenomenon here's what you do. Next time they give you sh*t just say, "You know what? How about instead of giving you grand kids I just save all that grocery money and open up a strip club or some other wildly successful, and very non-family friendly venture?"

Jay-Z and Beyonce have tons of money; they should have kids because they can afford college, nannies and groceries galore. Everyone else should focus on their careers, and start businesses to make jobs, to make the world a better place. That will last every one until about 7 pm or so. After that, crack a beer and play a video game.

lol alright peeps. Lets not totally flat out encourage disrespecting your parents. Lord. Im not a parent yet but come on now. You can be better than that. Anyway, its all about balancing out the rest of your life. I waste more time looking at gaming news and media than I do actually playing the damn games. Its sad but true. It does make me feel better though. If Im just checking out news or something it doesnt take long. Maybe 5 minutes and counts as a break. If I have work to do for school or whatever - I set the games and such aside til Ive made sufficient progress. Its a reward system of sorts. Your parents are right in most regards cuz they dont want you wasting time but they're also being over reactive in that they're overcompensating hoping you listen because they're getting angry at you over it. Parents are usually stupid is this regard. They dont look at it from your perspective before talking.

For me, Im getting older - Im almost 23 - and I still play but Im also constantly wondering if at some point i may just have to stop so that I can do other things properly. I keep thinking it may happen in the next six months or so but I cant be sure. Im in college so its always a battle. Im also going to try for grad school so it may well get even harder to keep playing. That said - you just have to keep the bigger picture in mind. Where are you going? Whats going on with your life? Should you be keeping your gaming in check? Probably so. I never really play for more than 2 hours at a time. Im on break now so I play more but during school I ususally dont play much during the week. Maybe 30 minutes to an hour a day if Im stressed out. Just think about it, think about yourself. Dont be a vegetable. You have to be self evaluating all the time.

As long as your priorities are balanced and taken care of, then there is nothing wrong with how you blow your spare time. They should be happy you're playing video games instead of partying, getting drunk, and getting in trouble. From what I gathered from your post, your parents are failing to communicate the why's behind telling you to stop video gaming. Perhaps you should ask them why and try to understand what they're getting at. At the same time, you can ask them why they can do their hobbies and you can't.

its a matter of perception, in our society playing pointless sports are considered great because they exercise the body. Well I say video games exercise the mind. Now anything can become unhealthy of course, and maybe there is something you should be doing that you arent doing.

If you think that you can replace entertainment, which in your case and ours is in the form of video games with productive work and you think you have the motivation to do so then do it! If, however, you think you'll just end up replacing video games with yet another form of entertainment be it movies or the internet then there's no point to it.

lol you dont completely throw caution to the wind though. No matter what you think your purpose in life is - you gotta keep yourself balanced.
