There is a great pre-built demonstration rig at PC Club that they are willing to sell me (they will wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows before giving it to me)-- here are the specs (from what I can remember):

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU

NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX

10,000 RPM (!) Raptor 150GB SATA HDD (optional, I have a SATA 500GB)

Windows Vista Ultimate x64

4GB DDR2 RAM

16x DVD RW Combo writer w/ lightscribe

HD TV-tuner (optional, I already have one)

//A new ~$100 Gigabyte motherboard//

//A very nice high-quality metal mesh case with many powerful fans, ~650W PSU//

Total: just under $2000, one-year free warranty, three-year for $149.

What do you think? For a pre-built rig, that isn't from the internet, is that a good price? I think it is, but my dad could use some convincing ;) Thanks in advance!

well its a very good price for a pre-built

beats the f*** out of alienware

XD

but if i were you id keep the 150gb and install the 500gb as a slave hard drive (secondary) that way your main drive is faster and you have 650gb of storage

=]

That's reasonable, but not a steal by any means. The newegg prices for the individual components are roughly:

CPU - 255
GFX - 370
Mobo - 100 (estimate, cause i don't know what mobo)
Nice Case with GTXable PSU ~ 150
RAM - 2 x 2GB runs about 75
HD Tuner ~ 100
Vista Ultimate x64 = 180
HDD - 170

Grand Total is roughly $1400. You get the store warranty and the guarantee that it will work with no liability on your end, so if building is out of the question, it's not that bad of a deal. Still steep though. I'd go the building route myself, but it's not for everyone for various reasons.

if the monitor is not included then no, whats making the rig so costly is the HDD and vista ultimate. you could build it for much less or even go to Dell and get more for less.

its a decent price for what your getting but thats the problem you could go to www.avadirect.com and get the same system with a little smaller harddrive, a different motherboard, and a low wattage powersupply but better quality with your choice of a $120 case for $1000 then you just pay $220 for a 8800gts so for $1220 you get a pretty similiar system with a free 3 year warrenty much much better deal

Thanks for your quick replies, guys!

I just tallied it up myself (and I found the case: Cooler Master CM 690) and got a ballpark of $1350, so that makes sense.

My dad and I just spent the last week dealing with motherboard problems after building one, and though it wasn't our fault it makes a pre-built monster like this look pretty tempting.

Thanks again!

I just remembered: the chassis doesn't come with a PSU, so about $150 more makes it about $1,500 by hand. Without the hard drive (and never counting the tuner) it comes to about $1280. WITH those it would come to... $1780? So close no matter what.

Last time I built my computer they offered to put it (slightly preassembled, methinks) together for me for $30. If I could find all of these parts seperate and have them put it together... I just might be able to... :D

Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 / ZALMAN CNPS9700

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard

G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

EVGA 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card-The 8800GTX has the older G80 core, the newer 8800GTS has the g92 (used in the Geforce-9 series). The new 8800GTS is typically faster than the 8800GTX for almost half the price, except in extreme high res and AA, due to the GTX's superior 384-bit memory interface over the GTS's 256. The difference is negligible though and doesn't justify spending $200+, and you'd need the 8800GTX in SLI to perform at the extreme res and AA levels that set the GTS and the GTX apart, because it would kill the GTX. Otherwise, GTS hands down, no doubt about it.

Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFDRTL 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive

PC Power & Cooling S75QB EPS12V 750W Power Supply (probably a better quality power supply than what you'd be getting from PC Club)

SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B (lightscribing is crap and is overrated. Lightscribe takes too long, no color (think grey image), and you need special disks (expensive). Buy a permanent marker.

PRICE (before tax. ): $1,295

If you want to cut the price down, then start with the harddrive since you said it was optional. You can also step the power supply down to this.

I'll let you find a case.

Thanks for the help--

I have an idea: if I can re-use 32 bit Vista Home Premium, 2GB DDR2 RAM, and 500GB SATA HDD, I can really bring down the prices. Add that with not getting the TV tuner and going for a GTS, and we're talking hundreds upon hundreds saved.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! :)
