Just wondering how the new AMD APU's match up against the PS3/360's graphics and processing capabilities?

Or, if one were to replace the cpu and gpu of the consoles and just replace them with an APU, how would that affect their performance?

Here's a vidio Linus did, testing some games on the APU. Can't remember the results, but off the top of my head, I'd say the APU would be a bit better than what consoles can do.

The A8-3850 is a bit faster than a console, but because of optimization there will still some be games that it performs worse than a console in.

indeed.. however generally spekaing in console ports like say war for cybertron, splineter cell conviction and portal 2 and fallout: new vegas the 3850 will kick the console all over the place like it was ragdoll physics hour at the fight club :P

Well, then with 2nd generation APU's wth possible crossfrire additions, the next generation of consoles may be able to produce some decent graphics.

Of course it won't be as good as pc, but the drop may not be AS big as it is today.

Either way, APU's are pretty awesome, and may be the future of all CPU's.

Off Topic:

BTW, why can't APU's graphics processing be taken advantage of with >6700 cards? I mean, couldn't at least some "low level" tasks be passed along to the APU, just to get a tad of a performance increase?

i think its because their APU's by themselves arent anywhere near as good and want to instead direct them towards the media center or htpc crowd until they can up their graphical horsepower.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is one of the most poorly optimized games I've ever played. Unless they fixed it up.

Technically its more powerful, BUT as devs program specifically for the Xbox/ps3 hardware the can get a LOT more performance from optimization. Thats kind of hard on PC as everyone is using different hardware.

The consoles don't get much headroom in perfromance over PC hardware that is similar.

Only devs who don't take the time to optimize a game for PC hardware will show much difference.

I know people who still have an old 7800gtx (a little bit stronger than console gpus) and they can play at console settings and sometimes better.

My old 6800gt used to play games at better settings than consoles for the first couple of years into this gen even though my 6800gt was weaker.
