Are the cards below 79xx based on the new design? I was under the impression that they would pretty much be a die shrink of the current 6xxx cards... I could easily be wrong though... I wouldn't mind if the 7850 was a die shrunken 6950.

Are the cards below 79xx based on the new design? I was under the impression that they would pretty much be a die shrink of the current 6xxx cards... I could easily be wrong though... I wouldn't mind if the 7850 was a die shrunken 6950.

What seems to generally happen is that "X Card" in the states is $299 and the cost for the same "X Card" in EUR is $299. Convert the 299 EUR to dollars and you roughly get $401 in the States. In the end, they pay more for the same hardware we get.

so these will probably be out around january, february next year. I'm hoping for a significant increase in a 7990 over the 5970 i'm running now. which i plan to offload to craigslist, once these hit the streets.

That's the conculsion I came to also. It was worded pretty ambiguously.

Have they confirmed they are keeping the same number alignments regarding the class of the card for this series?

Example 7870 replaces 6870? Or have they reverted back to the 7870 being flagship like the 5870? AMD is pretty confusing the way they market the product.

I have hunch that AMD will use two architectures that span across the 7000 series. I thought what they did with 6800/6900 series was very clever.

The 6800 series had a lot of the extra compute power removded, such as double floating point and some other features. They made them primarily gaming cards and stripped out the hardware they didn't need to make it a gaming card. They were able to cut a good chunk of power and transistors from the HD 5000 series and keep the performance.

Then, they have the HD 6900 which is pushing the limits and trying to be as much of a compute processor as it is a gaming processor. It think AMD should adopt this strategy for the next series as well.

AMD should keep their sweet spot GPUs using the VLIW5 architecture, it's tried and true and scalable, primarily for gaming. Then they should make their higher end stuff the GCN architecture. Enthusiast gaming performance as well as robust compute features
