Now that the Nvidia 680 GTX has been released for $499 how will this effect AMD's pricing and how long will it take?

I also want to say I'm pretty happy with Nvidia coming to the table with that price, they obviously have the best card and still charged nearly $100 less than AMD for an inferior product. Nvidia could have released for $650 and people likely would have paid it, but now the lower end cards will become more affordable.

I wonder how certain people on the board are going to Justify AMD this time around.

Obviously AMD have no choice but to lower their prices. I imagine they'll do that very soon, because right now the net is abuzz with how great the 680 performs, let alone at a lower price point. AMD need to drop prices now if they want to maintain market share, imo. A $100 drop would see to that.

I expect AMD to drop the price on the 7970 to the $450ish range once the GTX 680 sees widespread availability with good supply. Right now hardly anybody (if anyone at all) has any left in stock after the initial rush, so AMD doesn't have a lot of incentive to drop prices just yet. I'm sure it will come pretty soon.

AMD took advantage of getting out of the gate first, to charge whatever they wanted. Now that Nivdia's response is out, of course prices will drop.

edit: typo

They'll probably lower prices when inventory starts to back up.

It seems to me that both the 7970 and 7950 should be assured to outperform the GTX 580 and 570 if their is really enough increase in performance to justify an upgrade beyond the 3GB of memory and price under $499 & $ 399 respectively.

I don't know about you, guys, but I was very surprised with GTX 680. And it's not just the price, but also the very reasonable power consumption and the 256-bit memory bus. It's all so... AMD hehe. But it's Nvidia! You gotta love that, especially if they follow the same story with their midrange products. It means a full blown price war.

Well if AMD doesnt cut the price at least to the 500$ mark then they can discontinue the 7970 cuz its not going to be a viable option for anyone be it AMD fanboy or not. If some thing offers better performance at a lower pricepoint then you either lower prices or GTFO. I have nothing against AMD or NVIDIA (currently have 6970) but as stated above if they dont lower prices to 450$ nobody is gona buy the 7970.

So a $50 price difference is now "nearly $100?"

+$300 video card sales makes little to no impact on market share numbers. Don't expect any price drops in the next month or so due to TSMC volume. What you can expect is some AIB MIRs. AMD is cooking up something right now that is going to appear pretty soon, in the next few months. No it's not 7990.

They'll lower prices before it becomes an issue. AMD knows from past experiences not to wait for a problem to happen and then watch it go from bad to worse.

When I checked Newegg some of the 7970's were $579.99, add the tax difference (for me 13% on $80 is $10) and it's $90 so ya nearly $100

yep, but we get free health care. Also some US states have taxes around 8-9%, last time I checked, and some even as high as 10%. This is all without any health care provided whatso ever.

In the end you pay for it one way or another.

nope, canadians are taxed lesshttp://slumbuddy.wordpress.com/2011/03/20/comparison-of-us-and-canadian-tax-rates-for-2010/

life is good up north. Main reason why we have lower tax is b/c we don't really worry about the huge defense bill that the US worries about, and social security also isn't as big of an issue. Damn I love this country :P Only if we had acess to all of the US merchandise id be one happy dude.

That doesn't sound that good to be honest. Sure I pay 13% sales tax but I only paid 14% income tax last year and then I got nearly 1/3 of that back when I filed my tax return. - and no I'm not on the poverty line, salary isn't great but about $50,000 a year.
