Also,TC,I get the impression you really like AMD...

AMD also said that 1 7970 will equal a 6990 in performance. If we go by their hype in past releases, I'd say the 7970 will be just a tad faster than a 580 and consume about as much as a 6970. They said the 6970 would totally, absolutely, destroy, obliterate, ravage, rape, etc etc the 480 in performance...but instead it just barely managed to be equal to the 480/570. I would never trust AMDs post release claims again. Especially after the whole Buldozer odreal, which they also hyped up to be the coming of the CPU messiah, but it ended up much worse than the mid-range Sandy Bridge solutions.

I agree, while I keep an open mind and hate no hardware producing company,AMD is going way too far with all this 7000 series rumors and hype,I think...
In the end,I have a feeling most will end up being false...
All companies exaggerate about that. As for the 6970 it was very successful considering the power draw compared with gtx480AMD also said that 1 7970 will equal a 6990 in performance. Not sure what makes this a wild claim (well, other than not including "at idle" in the title) -- they found a way to shut down idle GPUs similar to power gating a multicore CPU, and made a purdy graph to make it look like a 4xNvidia set-up would suck down an unconscionable amount of power. Good on AMD and all because it will be a nice feature for CFX set-ups, but it's such an obvious idea I'm surprised they're just coming up with this now.

Anyways AMD has been beating nvidia at the power consumption for quite some time now, I wonder why they dont enter the smartphone market with all there power efficient solutions, thats where it really matters.

Except on desktop CPUs right? That's the only component that really needs to be low power.
Meh as long as I dont have to buy a new PSU, I really dont care about the power consumption of my computer.[QUOTE="GummiRaccoon"]

im glad At least AMD is pushing power efficiency, or else we'd have bigger and hotter cards every gen just like the ridiculous 480gtx. Also while not alot of pc gamers care too much about power consumption, everyone else does. You forget that pc gamers are a minority compared to all the other businesses, corporations and normal people out there. And like gambler said, if it werent for AMD doing wahat they're doing, nvidia would force all pc gamers to upgrade their power supply every gen.

Yeah for sure - I would definitely have bought a 6000 series for the heat and power alone, but the price-performance for these 480s beat any available AMD option. Hopefully Nvidia will continue with improving efficiency in their 700 series.

hd 6790.. your arguement holds some water but not as much as you think
id also like to point out that that was an individual set of cards, while the gtx 600's will be a whole lineup (with the addition of the oem's of the 500's this time)

they did actually claim it to be superior to the 6990 actually and then the benchies we have suggest = gtx 590
so i say that the hype breaker that qq was discussing has already come and gone, he just cant see it yet.

This is nice, but My GTX570 will last for some time to come. I plan for atleast another 2 years with it as my gpu, then I might make it my permanent Dedi Physx, and upgrade to the GTX7 or GTX8 series GPU.
My GF's HD6870 we are going to try and hold out until the HD8 series from AMD comes out. Her card is over a year old now, we plan to get at least another year or so out of it before we upgrade.
Pretty much we are set on GPUs for a while. But its nice to see AMD trying to make extremely powerful cards with less and less power consumption. Nvidia should also follow this line, if not eventually it will start affecting their sales, in comparison to AMD. Power Efficiency is becoming more and more of a stipulate this day in age, regardless if some pc gamers don't care about their power-consumption.
