which is better? The AMD is cheaper, but as for performance, which would win?

I normally go for AMD processors because their cheaper. Most of the time getting an intel over AMD would offer a negligable increase in performance for the price paid. Believe me I know someone who builds pcs for a living. he doesn't touch intel CPUs

Intel pumps out processors that are of latest technology & AMD basically takes the blueprint of those processors & improves upon it. It's like buying a Porsche which is almost perfect in automotive standards but having RUF making it a million times better.

It depends on your performance to price ratio that you want to maximize. If you're really looking for fantastic performance for your dollar in games, an X2 or a 200 dollar E8400 would be pretty good, actually. For that price, though, I wouldn't go with the 9950. Frankly, I wouldn't go with a quad-core CPU.

Q6600 G0. Perfect bang for buck, particularly in terms of overclockability.

Wrong, AMD Phenom processors are true Quad-cores, Intel's are limited by the North-Bridge. Intel is just implementing that in the next line of processors.

That being said, while the AMD's are more advance they still do not perform as well as the Intel. a Q6600 performs better than a 9850 Phenom, so the Q9300 should be quite better than the 9950 X4

But I'm sure the next line of AMD are going to be even better than Intel

Q9300 has better performance, 9950 is probably better price/performance.

Better than the current Intels, sure. I've little faith AMD will step their game up enough to beat Nehalem with their next lineup. I'd like to see it happen, but I don't think it will.

Intel does own Amd cpu's on all benchmarks but it's not that big difference , you wouldn't notice it. I have an Amd phenom 9600 and i am glad. No need intel for me but I am sure Intel has better cpu's like nvidia which is better than ATI .
