Hi,

for a few months now, I've been looking a lot for the perfect rig on a 1600$ cdn budget and I've found all the parts except for the CPU + MOBO. I just can't figured out which one I should choose between :

AMD rig: Phenom II X4 955 BE + Asus M4A79XTD EVO amd 790X

Intel rig: core i5 750 + asus P7P55D

overall, the intel rig is only 95$ more. So what's your opinion. I know the core i5 is a little bit better than the Penom 955 but I know that the lga 1156 (intel rig) is not really futureproof since no other cpus will be launched for this plateform (correct me if i'm wrong)...but how's the future of the AMD mobo, will there be other new AMD cpus for the AM3 mobo??

if it helps, I'll be using it for gaming only (old games and new ones)

thanks

I would go with the AMD the $95 would be a waste, im certain that AM3 will be here for a while maybe another generation of CPUs or two at most.

well i would say amd am3, because the am2+ socket got alot of love from amd.. i mean im about to upgrade from a dual core 6000+am2.. to a phenom II 940 quad am2+, on the same mobo, m3nht asus. (which is a very significant increase in cpu power, i think we can agree)

so i can imagine that amd will release some kind of new and improved chip for the am3 series before they move to a new socket.

not to say that intel wont with the icore5, but they perform about the same each will give or take a little in any given game. I5 may be slightly more powerful, but it is slightly more expensive. both are fairly new sockets.. its up to you really.

Exactly. And the Intel and AMD setups mentioned would both use Dual-Channel DDR3 RAM and not Triple-Channel like the 1366 socket type (original core i7's)

Memory bandwidth isn't much of a concern here; the primary use of the rig is for gaming.

Go AMD and spend the 95$ from Intel on a better graphics card, and you'll get a much bigger boost than going Intel with a cheaper card.

Kinda sucks at this time to build a PC considering that the i9's are coming as early as q1 of next year. it honestly up to u if you can overclock the hell out of a CPU then get an AMD but then again you really dont have to overclock intel ; ) so id say get an intel with cheaper Nvidia card like 9800gtx+ save the rest for the 300 series coming. so next year you can upgrade to beast 300 series. i5 with 300 series better than anything AMD could come up with.

good point but I'm really in a urge for a new rig...at the moment I have a Pentium 4, 3,4 ghz, with 2 gig of 667 ram and an ati x850xt PE which is almost dead...for the i9, I dont really care since I've read that they are going to sell at around 1500$...of course, the 300 series is really interesting but like I said, I'm tired of my crappy machine....and I've been waiting too long just because of that :new stuff every 3 months

I'll probably going to get the AMD + ATI 5850

Thank you all for your advices

Although the i5's do offer better price/performance and better general performance compared to the Phenom II's the difference isnt that big...and you are being crippled for the future having a budget socket...AM3 will support everything AMD makes so you cant go wring with either.

Cant go wrong with either choice, but id go with Intel cause its what i personally use, and havent had any problems. Other then that though your games will run great no matter what you pick.

I'd go with the Intel Core i5 unless you're building an absolute budget PC and simply cannot afford the extra $95 for the build. Will this be a gaming rig? If spending the extra money on the processor is going to cause you to get a much worse video card, get the AMD. If you're willing to stretch your budget, go Intel.

Thank you all but I've just finished my order on NCIX.com...I was luncky andmanaged to save a lot of money with their todays specials.

I went for the AMD since it was less with the specials. I even got the Phenom 965 instead of the 955 for an extra 2$ !!!!!!!!

In all, my built costed me 1350 cdn$ tax + shipping included !!!! this is almost 450 $ less than what I was expecting to pay at the beginning (1600 + tax)

With the extra money I'll get a 27 '' monitor

Here's what I've ordered:

-Case: Antec 902

-Mobo: asus M4A79XTD EVO

-CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE

-RAM: G.skill 4GB 2X2 DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24

-GPU: ATI 5850

-HD: Western caviar black 640GB

-Power supply: Antec TP 750W

-Windows 7 HOME 64 bit

-DVD/CD: Liteon iHAS324

....and I'll buy a sound card : creative X-FI titanium fatality pro when it's done (I didn't get it at the same time because they would have charged me the shipping since the 50lbs capwould have been breached with the sound card)

Indeed, thought I thought you were going to complain about the sound card for a moment, given our past conversations. (Then again, Creative's X-Fi cards aren't nearly as expensive as Auzentech's for the most part.)

What guarantee do we have that AMD will be using socket am3 with their next gen CPUs? I forget their code, atm. I don't really see a need for AMD to do that. Of course, since most of what the northbridge does that is important for performance is in the CPU itself, I guess it doesn't really matter.

wait wat .... get an AMD for overclocking 0_0 do you do any of it yourself???? AMD chips have always been pitiful at overclocks. Heck look at any OC races among the scene groups and you will rarely find any AMD CPUs as they barely overclock to a significant (read worthwhile) amount.....

actually the phenom II black editions can overclock quite well..

not to mention the phenom II isnt all greatly out preformed in gaming anyway. maybe a little(but not like some people make it out to be)

now dont get me wrong, intel makes the fastest cpus. no doubt and they overclock better usually. i would get one myself (if i was building a new rig Icore9 or something) but im not, im upgrading, and going from a 6000+ dual core to a phenom II BE 940 quad, i will gain alot of performance, not to mention i can OC the phenom II much higher than my 6000+... but im not gonna take the quad higher than 3.3/3.4ghz at the most. its all i really need. saving money so i can get a good gpu, cause a 940 PII slightly OC'd with a real powerful gpu.. will play just about anything i want it to, at just about any setting i want. for a lot cheaper price.

no offense but people looking to get the max intel setups are seeking great 3dscores.. because in gaming it isnt that much of a difference anymore between the Phenom IIs and the icores. (sure there will be notices here and there, but overall not that much)

i guess it really all depends on your budget then... great performance/ great price amd... best performance/ higher price intel.

same for ati and nvidia. atleast thats how it has seemed to me. although nvidia costs more, i kinda like it more, and my mobo is an sli mobo, so for this pc im sticking with nvidia. but im not all that biased when it comes to cpu or gpu, i mean they all do good if you know what your getting, and what your getting it for. gf pc is amd like mine, but we have her with ati radeon 3870, and when we upgrade her it will be to the hd5### series.

and our next full builds in a few years might end up being intel. depends on what is offered at that time..

In all, my built costed me 1350 cdn$ tax + shipping included !!!! this is almost 450 $ less than what I was expecting to pay at the beginning (1600 + tax)

With the extra money I'll get a 27 '' monitor

Here's what I've ordered:

-Case: Antec 902

-Mobo: asus M4A79XTD EVO

-CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE

-RAM: G.skill 4GB 2X2 DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24

-GPU: ATI 5850

-HD: Western caviar black 640GB

-Power supply: Antec TP 750W

-Windows 7 HOME 64 bit

-DVD/CD: Liteon iHAS324

....and I'll buy a sound card : creative X-FI titanium fatality pro when it's done (I didn't get it at the same time because they would have charged me the shipping since the 50lbs capwould have been breached with the sound card)

I have built a cheaper rig with SLI and Corei7 months ago that is stronger than yours now

1. The prices have gone up on stuff

2. He's Canadian anyway

3. HE ALREADY BOUGHT!!!

4. A 5850 is better AND CHEAPER than a GTX 260 SLI setup.

than try all to beat my benchmark can u? I built my rig in february and it can still compete with the top of the line.

Only because the 5850 is new with DX11 dosnt means everything, just watch some benchmark and compare it to some older cards. The 5850 is the same like the 4850 was, it will soon be normal. The 5870 is the only real card that hurts Nvidia. But like i said my rig is old and still is enough to fit my 120Hertz refresh rate.

WOW it's funny how a simple question can start a war. For the overclock question a few pages before, I'm not going to push too far, I'm not that much into overclocking...maybe from 3,4 to 3,8 max.

and for the : Mine is bigger than yours ;), when I get my computer, I'll give a shot at some benchmarks to see how good it is
