AMD vs Intel for PC Gaming

I am going to be getting a gaming PC custom built really soon. I was wondering what processor I should go with? I am looking to spend $800-ish total.

agreed, and the price difference makes amd the better choice.

If you're on a budget go for AMD. If you have money to burn and want the absolute fastest, go for intel.

I like AMD, they offer better bang for your buck. Also intel are sneeky using illegal business tactics. :P

Here's a good start.

Well i can say AMD is no joke for this reason:Ive had a an AMD single core 3500 for 3 years.Im currently playing Sacred2 on high,played Fallout 3 on medium and now im playing Mass Efect on medium.Thats some pretty taxing games right there and for a 3500 single core to keep and playing with a little lag here and there says something.So with that performance,im stickn AMD all the way,goes to show they know what theyr doin..And my vid card is a 7950Gt,1.5 ram.

For an $800 rig, I'd look at the E8500. If you must go Quad, I'd look at the Q8400 or the Phenom II X4 940.
4GB DDR2-1066
640GB Western Digital HDD
Antec 300 case (best case for the money, ever)
HD4850 or better

Something along those lines. If you plan on overclocking, go Intel. BE or not, it's still much more effective.

AMD is WAY easier on your wallet...I'm currently running Phenom2 x3 2.8GHz Black Edition but OC's EASILY to 3.2...Go ahead an Google it and you'll see it's one heck of a CPU.

I matched it w/ a 4870 VCard and really I'm just smilin...cuz I saved sooo much $.

Well my 2 cents anyway...

I built a new pc a couple of months ago with about the same budget and went with a amd phenom II x3 720 BE and and it doesn't disappoint. It's hard to beat that cpu in price/performance. The main argument against intel which i haven't seen here yet is that if you're not getting an i7 (which is pretty much out of the question with that budget) you are going to be on a socket type that is as good as dead. So either go amd or wait for what i5 is going to offer us.

Intel have the best CPU's

AMD have better price/performance.

If you are even thinking about overclocking go to Intel. If not and are low on money AMD is a fine choice.JigglyWiggly_

i went from an AMD opteron 170 to an i7 and saw a pretty big boost in framerates, without even changing my graphics cards.

Saying that, Phenom II and the best C2Q are about equal for games.. so it might be better if you got a intel quad which would be even cheaper, though it would be a back step in technology and be harder to upgrade later on.

I7 is great for everything, you can encode videos really fast aswell.

If you're going to buy based on benchmarks alone, you're already starting off on the wrong foot. Unless you're some hardcore enthusiast benchmarking all the time, then by all means, go for best there is! Of course that comes with a luxury tax. :twisted:

If you can see the difference in real time, do that. Especially in gaming, you'll hardly, if at all, notice a difference.

I don't think you can compare any of the i7's with anything yet, they're still kind of in a class of their own. :P
