AMD/ATI vs nVidia...

I've always used nVidia cards, but my friend has always used AMD/ATI, and swears by them. We're always arguing over which is better...

So I'm curious to see what you guys prefer... Do you have a preference and why?

I would prefer ati because most of their cards are very cheap and give descent perfomance. Nvidia has also very good cards, and right now it has the edge over ati, but that is very less. Competition wise, it's very close, but for me ati, and only ati. The irony though here is that when i asked my father for a graphics card, he gave me a nvidia 8400gs.

I've purchased both, liked both - whatever is the best deal for the money at the time I'll go with.

I've always had better luck with AMD cards, nvidia cards tend to break down or develop problems in my experience.ferret-gamer

I go with best price performance in the 3-400$ range. More often than not that's amd.

Yep. Here too... I go for what I consider to be "the best" at any particular moment. If and when my wallet agrees, of course.

I prefer nvidia software, but if an amd card performed the same for cheaper i'd buy that.

I've only had problems with an NVidia GeForce 5200, but that was after I threw it out the window because of scrotum-shriveling performance (it was worse than my MMX 440). Replaced it with a PoV 5950 at the time, by the way, which worked like a charm until it was time to go to the retirement home and I got an Asus EN7600GT...

As of 2009 I switched to ATI, because I wanted a decent replacement for my 2007 Asus EN8800GTS 512 TOP and NVidia had nothing that could compete with ATI at that particular moment...

Last little prob I had was with a squeaky fan on an AMD XFX7970 Dual Fan Black Edition, but those are the only "drawbacks" I've ever had with either manufacturer.

Personally I'd lean slightly towards Nvidia simply because I've had better experiences with them (no issues with a Geforce 2something, 4something, 8600M GT and a 560 Ti), while both of my ATI/AMD GPUs have had issues (wonky HD4850, my netbook's E-350 doesn't always play nice with driver updates), but there really isn't any difference and you should just go with whatever has the best value for your budget.

I've been finding ATi/AMD to be better value than Nvidia. The extra bells and whistles on Nvidia cards just don't feel that useful for most games, so I prefer to put the money into a more powerful AMD card.

All price/performance for me.

From a 5800ultra to sli 7600s to a 8800gtx and a 8800gts to a gtx260, I never had a single problem. Except that SLI was a mess back then, and I was still in middle school and too immature to be smart about it and actually use google.

My 5870 was the best bang/buck I ever had. But the drivers were a MESS, I had to track down alpha versions of 10.4 to stop suttering in BC2, but those drivers had problems with other games, etc etc. Plus, the fan was too damn loud, it was a vanilla version though. I sold it as soon as the 580 came out.

I am running dual 5770s on my secondary machine, but I don't use it as much. I cba to hunt down drivers and CAPs anymore though, it's annoying.

My 580 has been running like a dream, I even neglect looking for new drivers because I don't feel I need them. It runs hotter than I would have wanted to, but nothing serious. The only problem (during the summer it's a problem, in the winter it's a blessing) is that the card produces tons of heat, and the room is usually 3-4 C hotter than the rest of the house.

For me, it's Nvidia all the way, at least untill AMD/ATi fix their damn drivers and CFX scaling/compability.

Physx, CUDA etc. are nice bonuses to have too.

both are decent haven't had a real problem with either of them. Maybe some small problems here and there like flickering in some games for my radeon 4770 and a game not even wanting to start up with my geforce 460. I prefer to go with AMD mainly because they have best bang for buck, and power consumption is always better than nvidia, what can I say I love my low power usage cards. My 6950 performs better than the 560ti and it uses less power than nvidias geforce 460.....pretty pathetic on nvidia's side but thats how it ended up.

I have no preference as both produce great cards. I've always used ATI because I don't see the need to switch.

Nvidia cards tend to resemble a phoenix, they burn hot and then go down in a blaze of glory. Typically when they self destruct, is when I would recommend people to upgrade anyway.

I've bought up to50 cards over the last 4 years and I usually get best performance for the budget at the time. 9600 gso's, gts 250's, gtx 460's, amd 4850's, 5830's, couple 5850's, amd 6850's, 6870's, one 6950 that bios updates to a 6970, etc. Both companies make great products and I have never had any crash on any rig i've made for people. I tend to like nvidia drivers more simply for the more centralization of the update procedure compared to amd mini patch wonderland though steam integration has eased things these days.

Price to performance has flipped all over the place for both companies. Right now, amd has the upper hand in my opinion expecially in the mid range arena but for a while those 460's were dang redicoulous in price. AMD to me tends to make a more "powerful" card but things even out after the nvidia "influence" on many games and drivers as a whole between the 2.

In the end, it just comes down to preference for each person.

Nvidia for PhysX, general support, and a better control panel. I like both AMD and Nvidia hardware, but nvidia's supprot and controls seal the deal for me.

I build computers for people from home. Not a major increase in revenue but a fun hobby to have and get to help many people with great rigs for good prices and better hardware. also lets me test alot of pieces of hardware.

I would agree with you, if not for the 7970. First of all it has a healthy appetite for big wallets and secondly, it's a serious leap forward in respect to the 6970. AMD driver support has come a long way, but I'm still waiting on drivers to decently support crossfire in Skyrim, Rage, Driver San Francisco and quite a few other games... :(

My 9800gtx preformed to the way longer than I expected. And I love my 2 560ti's. When I built my newest computer I found that ATI actually cost more for what I wanted. But I am jealous of the vram that ATI packs into the competition.Cj19_32

1. That doesn't make me upgrade my 400W Corsair PSU

2. Costs $150.

3. Owns all games.

(because I'm a cheap ass)

Just so happened that it's AMD cards which fulfilled those requisites.

I prefer nvidia, but I'll get a AMD if the price is signifigantly better, like next week when i'll be getting a 6870

The reviewer chose 9 games out of 10 titles that were nvidia sponsored, said the 6950 was getting owned by the geforce 460 and called it a day. For a professional thats unacceptable, but I guess when the website is getting donations from nvidia its an obvious outcome. Anyways I stand by what I said, if nvidia drivers are the best then I shouldn't be seeing any problem threads created on these forums. If not then you admit they're not as good as ppl say they are.
