Amnesia is a very good horror game that was released just last month. I haven't seen any threads about it, and I think it deserves some attention.
It's very different from most other horror games, because it's not based around violence, but rather survival. The gameplay is based on interacting with the environment to solve puzzles and avoid enemies. Everything you do in the game, like opening doors, drawers and closets, requires you to use the mouse to physically open it. This is one of the things that makes the game unique. When you have to run from enemies, this makes you feel like a part of the game. You really have to open doors and shut them behind you, and then attempt to bar yourself in by pulling something heavy in front to block it.
As I mentioned, the game is not based around violence. This means no weapons to defend yourself with, which makes the game a lot more scary. When you encounter an enemy, you have two options: hide or run. Sometimes you can find cover behind a nearby crate, or in a closet, but it's when you have no option but to run that the game really gets you. I've never experienced such an andrenaline rush from a game before.
The game also has a unique health system for your character. In addition to the regular physical health, you have mental health, or sanity. Being in places with no light, and places where not-so-nice things are lurking around causes the player to loose sanity. This triggers hallucinations, distorted vision and, if you loose enough sanity, sluggish and jerky controls. When you eventually run out of light sources, it can be truly terrifying.
This is definitely the best horror game I've ever played, and if you haven't tried it, you really should.
