Hello all,

I wanted to buy Overlord for either the pc or the 360. now my issue is this:

I have a PC with an 8800gts etc and monitor capable of displaying 1680x1050. I also have the 360 which is capable of the 1080i.

Which version should i get? I want please an honest opinion as to which one will look better graphically? Will the Pc b able to display the same grapx that the 360 can giventhe 360's"hi-def" nature? Will my PC even display it in Hi-def. Pleas assume i have a "pc gaming machine" and the monitor as stated.

360 games to me have more "polish" than its pc counterparts...maybe im wrong:?

Can someone please guide me :)

Thanks

1080i looks virtuallly identicle to 720p

with your PC though...you will essencially be running it at 1080p.

So your PC will run it at a far greater resolution then your console....assuming you have the hardware to back it up....and with an 8800GTS you do.

Get it for the PC, 1680x1050 on a PC monitor looks better than on TV.

Don't worry about performance on the PC, the game has a 30 FPS cap and it won't drop from that.

(Although Im not getting this game just for that reason, I can't stand 30fps.)

So whats with all the "hi def" fuss with the 360? Is it simply because the consoles have never had resolutions like the PC has up until now....so they glamorise it as "hi def", when really, the PC has been doing it for years?

the truth is that PC's have been doing native 720p for a decade now, so yes they have been doing "HD" for much longer.

even so, by todays standard, the resolutions run on the Consoles are rather tiny compared to PC resolutionss.

Console resolutions are 1280 by 720.

your Monitor (and Video card) can display resolutions of 1680 by 1050.

techniclly if you had the proper display device you could do 2560 x 1600.

So technically then shouldnt the 360 be a HI RES system and not called "high definition"? I suppose they called it high definition so people wouldnt say exactly what you said in your post...ie: "errrr, whats so speacil about your 360's "hi res", my PC does 1680x1050 :?"

Am i on the right path now :)

yes HD is simply a marketing term...there will always be something "HD-er" on the PC then on the consoles.

BTW: I was rather curius about this so I just checked....IMAX theathers run at a resolution of 10000 x 7000.

Also depends on the size of TV you have. Your PC will have a higher resolution, but if you have an HDTV that is fairly big, you might enjoy it more on there even if it isn't as good of resolution on your PC. I own quite a few game systems in addition to my PC, and an HDTV as well. 360 looks just fine in 720p to me.

Also, they use the term HD because that's what the TV's go by...HDTV.

I think thats the whole point...Keep in mind though, these IMAX theaters are huge, and you can not possibly see the entire image without tilting your head, and the human eye with the average 120* arc, can see of a resolution of about 9000 x 9000, meeing that in reality, its still pretty far from the limit.

Eh, I could relate to your question. It is only my opinion, but it's backed up by facts.

At my friend house we tried DIRT and Overlord on his Pioneer 60" Widescreen Plasma HDTV (1080) and it was very impressive. Mind you though that is a wooping 5500K TV that I could only dream about.

Graphics were very nice no doubt and I had a great time.

Once I arrived home I made myself comfortable at my 21" LCD 1600x1200 and to me it looks very crisp and clear. Is it better then HDTV graphics wise? To me it was.

If you have decent hardware I would prefer PC version, good monitor somehow feels right to me. Granted I'm a PC gamer, but I have seen what HDTV can do and it's very impressive visually.

However I enjoyed Overlord more on my LCD. It looked brighter, clearer and felt just right. That's me though. This is not the only reason either.

PC version - 40$

360 version - 60$

I don't have 3-4K + for excellent HDTV nor do I have x360 and controller, and I'm not use to controller. I configured the game very nicely to mouse and kb which worker excellent.

My friend? He kicked back on his couch and enjoyed the game. As did I, in my own way :)

Since you have goods of the both world, graphic are not very huge in difference between HDTV and good Monitor. If I had both - I would go with my PC. Personal preference.

My HDTV is 32" and my PC is 21", bt once settled into the game, your not really thinking - "oh i should have played it on my 32", mainly beause of the immersion factor you get with both sizes.

In re to your HDTV comment....yea i knew that :? I meant it should be called "high res" and not High def, because really it is just displaying a high res (for consoles), as i have been informed :)

I think most poeple misunderstand this issue.

HD is a set of standard resolutions a consortium of manufacturers and content industry reps have agreed upon.PCs have had displays capable of most of the HD standards for over a decade, they were made to read text on. Its not something your salesman thought up to impress you.

While there are wide flatpanel monitors that fit the native specs of that used for HDTV, computer monitors don't have to adhere to native HD spec. Your monitor doesn't, its higher than 720p but under 1080i/p.

Its not a matter of "he has an 8800gts, run at 1080p", the display has to have(1920x1080) that many pixels on it to be possible.

Id get it for PC, i think monitors are better quality and your PC is better spec than your 360.

Also worth mentioning is that the PC versions of games usually have higher quality textures and models than the console versions. Because PC graphics hardware generally has greater overall processing power, more available memory and much higher bandwidth than console hardware, they can afford to be a little more liberal with the visuals without sacrificing performance. And PC hardware needs to be more powerful because the output resolutions console gamers are now discovering have been standard on PC for years. But if you ask me, anything over 1,024x768 (1,366x768 if you're running widescreen) is pointless in games anyway. The viewport on any game is exactly the same, regardless of resolution, so all you're doing by jacking up the resolution is forcing your graphics card to render a bunch of completely redundant pixels. You aren't going to notice any pixelization at 1,024x768 unless you are actively looking for it, and the only discernible difference between 1,280x1,024 and 1,600x1,200 is because of the decreased refresh rate (a lower refresh rate makes your display look sharper). And that's what we have anti-aliasing for anyway. The reason console games look so polished at 720p is because of anti-aliasing. Texture and model quality aren't as high as they could be, but FSAA (along with bump-mapping, normal-mapping and specular highlighting) smooths everything out so you don't really notice, especially in the heat of a battle. Hell, the ATI Xenos GPU featured in the Xbox 360 actually has a second on-board die specifically designed to allow games to run with 4x FSAA without taxing the GPU itself. There's a reason they take this FSAA stuff so seriously: it works.
