AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor is the OEM in my HP, Im courious if this type of upgrade is worth the extra $$$ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor, heres the link for both.

yeah its worth it, the 6000 series runs pretty hot though. I think you'll be happy. BTW the 6400+ is the same price and has a larger L2 cache.

can I just remove my old unit and plug this right in....are is there more to it? and whats the diff in the cache? Sorry NOOB.

If I completely explained the L2 cache this would turn into an essay, essentially L2 cache just improves the efficiency of the processor. You can look it up and read about it, its pretty interesting. You would probably need to do a bios update depending on your Motherboard. The dual core version of the 3800 is an AM2 processor so yeah you can just drop it right in. I would suggest getting a good cooler for it, if you dont already have one, because this will create double the heat of the old processor.

Unless your mobo supports AM2+ processors the 6400 is as good as you can go with AMD.

It doesn't have a larger L2 cache, both the X2 6000+ and the X2 6400+ feature 2x1MB of L2 cache.

Ill be, I could have sworn my 6000+ only had 2x512 on the L2. Well if you want 200 more megahertz of performance lol, then the 6400 is fine. Sorry for the bumb advice, suprised me too.
