So I picked up a PC Gamer magazine at the store the other day, and the first thing I saw was a massive two page ad for cyberpowerpc.com. I haven't seriously looked into modern PC hardware in a while (been gaming on a laptop for about 3 years, since my last homemade desktop finally crapped out), and I was blown away by how cheap they were selling desktops with what I'm pretty sure is sweet hardware. Knowing that comparable machines would be even cheaper if I built it myself, I thought it might be time to start seriously looking at prices, and maybe make a move for a new desktop.

Basically, I want an i7 quad-core cpu, and an nVidia gpu that's capable of doing Physx, and I'd like to keep the whole thing in the $900-$1000ish range, if not less (if that's possible). What do you guys think?

Not looking for AMD gpus, and not looking to buy an overpriced Alienware. Get out of here with your ads, troll. Don't think I haven't seen that almost all of your modest post count has been Alienware ads.

the_bi99man

You could get similar performance to an i7 with an i5 (and save $100), and the majority of Nvidia GPUs can use Physx. Give me 10 minutes, while I think of a build.

Also, don't listen to Wizzyman101. You only have to look at his other thread to figure out that he's either massively stupid, or a really bad troll.

EDIT: You're in the US, right? Also, do you want to SLI in the future, and do you want to overclock? Also, do you need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, OS, etc? Assuming you want to SLI, overclock, and you have a monitor, mouse, keyboard and OS, here's a pretty good build of just over $1000.

Doesn't take a genius to look online for 5 minutes and see that you can build a computer with the exact same hardware for considerably less money. So, no it's not the best one on a budget. That's a fact. And no ones gives a sh!t if you work for some stupid f**king computer store, you self-righteous son of a b!tch. GTFO before you get reported for spam, m8.

Yeah, i'm in the US. And that build looks pretty sweet. I actually didn't know that the i5 came in a quad-core. I have a dual-core i5 in my laptop, and I thought you had to get an i7 for the quad-core. Yeah, peripherals I'll deal with separately. I'd definitely like to have the option of SLI down the road, so that's pretty sweet. Is there a particularly big jump in power from the gtx570 to the 580? And, how about the 6 series? Also, am I reading that build right? It comes with a 120gb ssd PLUS the TB hdd?

Also, that build has 8gb RAM, which kicks ass. My laptop only has 4. Most of the PCs i saw in that ad I mentioned, that made me want to look into it, had 16gb. Is there really much of a benefit from more than 8gb right now?

Just recommended this to another dude, the $ 870 build with i5 2500k should work fine, if you really want i7 replace the CPU with an i7 2600K and you'll be within your budget.

Nice. Lots of great builds here. I'll keep all that in mind. Looking at that $870 build with the i5 and the GTX 560... if I wanted to spend a little more and upgrade one of those, which should I do? Get an i7, or like GTX 570 or 580?

Edit: Just build your own PC from scratch. It's fun and it'll be worth it down the line.

I often google "best XXX for the money ZZZ." where XXX is the item, perhaps a video card, then ZZZ is the month/year. So if you're trying to get the best GPU you can for 300 bucks, look up "Best video card for the money july 2012" [make that june since we're at the beginning..] and it'll present you with a nice page on Tom's Hardware where they've done all the dirty work for you.

Also you get to pick your own motherboard, which will determine how many hard drives you can hook up, how many RAM sticks you can install, whether you can go into SLI, whether you'll be able to overclock easily; lots of important stuff.

That's what I figured. What's nVidia's current absolute top of the line single card? I hear a lot of talk about the 560-580, but isn't there a 6 series?

680 is the top dog of nvidias line up atm but I would say save yourself 100 bucks and get a 670. Theres only a few frames difference between them @ 1080p. 680 will pull away when you start going to higher res.

Hmm. Cool. Yeah, I don't see myself getting a monitor that'll do more much more than 1080p, so that probably won't be an issue. How good is the performance boost for the 6 series though? Think I'd be better off getting a 670, or getting a 570, and maybe another one to SLI a bit later on?

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/598?vs=518 I have SLI 570's myself and Im curious to how close to the 670 they are. Going to get Heaven 3.0 and run it to see the comparisons with some of the benches from that that other 670 users have posted. Id say get the 670 but it all depends on your funds.

Damn. Thats some sweet performace for the 570, especially at the more 1080p-ish resolutions. I think one of those would be perfect for me at this point, and if it would get a bit better with another in SLI, that's just frosting.

In regards to heaven benchmarks, running at the same settings as the others in the rate my rig thread (albeit my res was 1600 x 900 seeing as 1440 wouldnt stick) I got a total score 3030. The SLI 570's beat out the single 670's and the 7900 series from AMD just by a little bit. However, SLI 670's destroyed them by ~1000 points total score. Seriously, get the 670, save the extra bucks even if it sets you back a week or two. 670's be beast.

Also, you should lool into the 6 series , there a nice gain in power from the 570 to the 670. If your budget allows it, go for the 670.

I said that because I thought it was him who was hating on the X51 in another thread. Must have been a different user.

IMHO you'd be much better off getting a 670 rather than a 570. And a 750W PSU for SLI later.

Poor performance for the money, overpriced case, name that makes computer illiterate yuppies moist, but doesn't mean anything to me because I'm not a tool... the list goes on.

Seriously, even if I hadn't stated multiple that I have no desire to buy a pre-built, because I know how to built it myself, and you get far more for your money that way (and you can't argue that. It's completely undeniable, and to say otherwise is to admit idiocy), I could still save a couple hundred bucks by removing the alienware name and getting a dell with the EXACT SAME HARDWARE.

On topic though, thanks for the input, fellas. Bunch of good info. I think I'm try to save up a bit of moneys, and build myself a real beast in a while, with a high-end i5, a gtx 670, and 700+ watt psu.

Nice. Do tell us all of the specs! Also, be sure to post your rig in the Rate my Setup thread.
