Hi guys

I've just bought Oblivion and am really wanting to play through it with some decent settings. I've currently got a 6800GT, is that going to be suitable? Its in a 3.6Ghz, 2G RAM machine. If not I'd have about £120ish to spend on a new graphics card, as long as it would give me a large boost in performance. Any suggestions?

Stick with what you got, £120 will not get you anything substantially better.

your 6800Gt may be able to run it but i doubt on high settings try this site (ebuyer), and the 7950GT OC'ed is under your budget http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/cat/Graphics-Cards-Nvidia/subcat/nVIDIA-GeForce-7-Series

well not really it will increase performance but unless your thinking about gaming on DX10 games then get the 7950GT if you are then wait a bit for the some mid range DX10 cards to come out.

I have a 6800GT and play Oblivion with Bloom not HDR in medium/high setting in 1280x1024 and get mid 20s.  I do turn the grass all the way off because the grass really effects performance and its one of those things that looks stupid set half way because you just have grass popping up out of the ground 8 feet in front of you.  I think grass should be all or nothing and going nothing helps performance a lot.

Also when you are not out in the "world" and are just in a "town" the 6800GT really runs well.  Sure the game can look a lot better with a better video card but still looks and plays great with lesser settings on the 6800GT.  Plus you could crank a few things up higher if you are willing to play in 1024x768, because of my LCD I'm not.

What about one of these;

Could probably stretch to that if I was going to be impressed by it.

That card would be great for running Oblivion. By the way, basersx, congratulations on 5000 posts :)

Yes of course.  The 8800GTS is the 2nd most powerful GPU on the market right now.  It will play Oblivion with HDR pretty much maxed out!  If you want to spend the money you would not be disappointed with it at all.

Just make sure you have a solid PSU before you buy it though.

What PSU would you suggest? Again, as cheap as possible!

I would not get a cheap PSU. Invest in a Corsair HX 520W for the 8800GTS.
