I'm getting ready to upgrade my PC so I will be reformatting to start with a clean slate. I figure I should update the anti virus / spyware being used on the system. I downloaded the latest versions of Microsoft Security Essentials and Ad Aware. I have Spybot Search & Destroy but it looks like it hasn't been updated since 2009 so seems irrelevant now. Are MSE and AA enough to cover the system or is there another program I should look into?

There are plenty of free programs to try. I use Avast or AVG myself.

I only use Avast!

Never had a problem with the program, never had a virus with it installed, and it's FREE.

I use a combination of Avast! and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. You can't just use Avast!,because quite a lot of malwarewill only be detected by Malwarebytes... also, create frequent system restores... just in case.

Antivirus: Avira AntiVir (low resources) or AVG
Spyware: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and SpywareBlaster or Spybot S&D (Spybot does same job but includes cleaner. Not needed if using MBAM. Had conflicts and XP account corruptions with it in the past, though)

I always use Malwarebytes, and Spybot Search and Destroy. They get just about everything between the both of 'em

MSE, Malwarebytes, and Spybot Search and Destroy are good. Spybot's detection rules are always updated and, even with the poor interface, it's very good at finding spyware.
