over the last few weeks the media has been getting very hyped over Fallout 3. i must admit, i didn't pay any attention to the game since i don't put much stock in Bethesda, but out of boredom i read a couple of hands on previews over at IGN ( and my was that guy excited... ). to my surprise, it does seem to have quite a potential.

with the game a few weeks away from release, what's your honest opinion for this game? i'm definitely interested enough to at least keep an eye out for it. at the same time, i fully understand why the fans of the original series ( like me ) are worried. on one hand, if Oblivion is any indication, Bethesda obviously doesn't have the creativity to stay true to the post apocalyptic glory epic; on the other hand, with the help of technology, Bethesda might be able to create a technically amazing game that is necessary for modern market. some are also dismayed by the initial lack of modding tool -- but the original fallout games didn't have mods as well, so i think it's unfair to undermine F3 in this respect.

overall, imo there's no reason to be stubborn if Bethesda can really pull this off. let's keep our fingers crossed -- we need all the good games we can have, right? :)

I really hate to be this guy but... we've already had several Fallout 3 polls that looked strangely similar to this one this weekend.

Option 3... I haven't really seen enough cohesive material to get a good feel on this game yet. I was already dissapointed that they went with first-person, so I didn't give much attention to it early on. But, if they can pull off the mood and the humor, I'm willing to give it a shot. Seems more like a spinoff than a sequal right now, but I am hoping it stands up well on its own.

one of them prbably means that Fallout 3 isn't really going to be a RPG (would be more like a shooter), and so it may suit you well.

Hmm... Might be worth a look, then. Just so long as it has strong action, rather than tediously traversing some huge world, levelling up and interacting with retarded NPCs...

Bethesda might be able to create a technically amazing game that is necessary for modern market.

Jinroh_basic

that's the best 16 words or more to describe i think what bethesda is trying to do with fallout. For those that played fo 1, 2 experienced 2 of the best games on any platform to date, but that was 10 years ago and legendary for that time. I hadn't played tes series before oblivion and i put over a hundred hours on there and haven't come close to starting on the main quests.

I think with this one their trying to get to as many people as possible, from what i've read it still has a lot of the reminiscent feel of the old fo games. and i see the vats as a new take on the old combat system how it would have the animation of vault dweller firing his weapon and then depending on where you aimed it would miss, or tear apart the appendix that was targeted. and yes you play in first person, 3rd, or top down, but as far as to the quote i think most people wouldn't pay $50-$60 for the old games they want what is current tech used on the game for their platform which is what bethesda is trying to accomplish.

I think that from what i've read and seen bethesda seems to be very knowledgeable about the old games and what made them great and they also seem to have a fond love for the old games and intend on doing a third installment justice by keeping the same old elements just implementing them into the modern day game.

Yeah, it looks fun. As my friend said, "As soon as I saw the trailer where the guy is like, 'Now I'm going to use the power glove...' and punches off that dude's head, I was sold."

It's one of a handful of games I'm really looking forward to. I don't know what people are complaining about. It's got the VATS for people who want the old school turn based fighting or real time for the action crowd. And the visuals, music, and dark humor look spot on to me.

Speaking of which this is going to piss off the fanboys but I've been playing the old Fallout games (1,2, and tactics) and gameplay wise they are ok but not THAT great. I think they're letting nostalgia taint their memories and unfairly judging Fallout 3.

to be fair, i remember all the game sites were VERY hyped over Oblivion as well, so maybe we shouldn't take the previews too seriously. i hope Bethesda would at least release a demo for this game.

also, there's no telling actually how good the real time first person shooting portion would fare. it's a complex mechanism that involves physics and most importantly enemy AI. Flagship couldn't pull it off....what Bethesda is capable of remains to be seen.

***Opinion Warning: If you don't agree... I don't care!***

I'm certainly looking forward to it, however, I have doubts it'll be better than 1 and 2 in their respective time periods. I think F3 will be the best RPG/FPS of the year, but F1&2 were the best RPG's for several years. I'm hoping I'm wrong and F3 turns out to be the most awesome thing ever, but I'll just wait and see...

I mean this with the greatest amount of respect possible but anyone who has voted "better than the previous Fallout games" seriously needs to have their head examined. If Bethesda has proved anything in the last few years it's that they haven't a clue about what makes a good RPG. Were there even choices or consequences in Oblivion? Level scaling? Radiant AI? Heh, what an utter disappointment.

Everything I've read and seen about Fallout 3 makes me think it was designed for Oblivion and NOT Fallout fans. It seems very sophomoric and very shallow. Hence, it'll probably be a best seller, garner excellent reviews and win GOTY on many of the more, uhm, respectable gaming sites.

What a world...

Previews are almost always very optimistic and positive. An interesting example was Lair for the PS3. Even as little as a week before the games launch previews and handson reports talked about how amzing it looked how much fun it was and how interesting.. Once it launched it got 4.0 score and everyone pretty mucha greed that the devs had messed up big time.

That said, I am looking forward to fallout3. It's really hard to judge anything from clips and interviews so only time will really tell how the game hold up.

I never played a Fallout game but after playing Oblivion I expect this to be the same with a better, more original setting.

I'm ashamed to admit I'm not very familiar with the first two Fallout games. I've been meaning to check them out over the years, but didn't get around to it until Good Old Games launched. I bought both, and have played the first a little. WAR just game out recently, so most of my playtime has been devoted to that game and the WOTLK beta.

I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 based on it being a Bethesda game, and the setting.

I am excited about it and think it will do a mediocre job of representing the fallout universe. with todays censorship and massive politicizing of video games and the pandering to wider audiences it will definately fall a little short. they got some big shoes to fill.

I wasnt really all that concerned about vanilla fallout 3 until I read this article

"Well, avid addicts, so much for modding real drugs back into Fallout. In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines dropped a bomb, saying that mod tools aren't "on Bethesda's schedule right now."

"Folk probably took for granted that every time we make a game, there's a mod tool," he said. "We explained to folk that it takes a lot of time and effort to get that tool ready for release, and it's not on our schedule right now. We need to get the game done and out. It's not to say we won't do it. It's that right now we have an enormous amount of work to do, for three platforms and all these different languages to get it out around the wall. Right now, we can't say definitively 'there will be mod tools, and here is when they'll be out.' That work remains to be done."

Don't worry, though. Bethesda doesn't plan on wringing your wallet dry with monetized DLC in place of a modding community. Hines did, however, applaud the idea (jokingly, we hope).

"That's a good theory, by the way. And probably on some level it would work… but from our standpoint, whenever we do an Elder Scrolls game and release those mod tools, it takes a ton of work and effort. This is a bigger undertaking for us, and one we've not yet scheduled for."

"We have our own little blog we run from Bethesda, and every week we're out there interviewing people from our mod community – so it's clearly something we support, something we take interest in and something we place value in and spend a lot of time highlighting good mods. It's just the tools take time. They don't magically appear. Someone's got to write help files for what all the scripts do, and get it released as a consumer product. Because it's not in that state otherwise. Developers will make do with anything."

There those game developers go again -- wrecking things for everyone. How dare they?

Indignant rage aside, are you still excited about Fallout 3?"

I was expecting for modders to fill in the holes and add in the controversy that made the other fallouts so much fun.

I am sure I will enjoy fallout 3. but I would much rather they have released van buren and this new release to be fallout 4.

none of the original Fallout games has official modding tool...in fact, i don't think there's any significant modding community dedicated to those games. having a modding tool would be great for F3, but i would rather they deliver the content spot-on.

id say no skills depend on how accurate your weapons are and in order to get a heashote you have to ue a skill and select head then you see a cinematic if skills aint high eniugh then you miss, not a fps!

I admit that I am curious about this game. Anticipating. From the gameplay vids I've seen, it looks like it could be pretty fun.
