I don't think I've played (or heard of) good free MMORPGs. D&D Online is becoming free (sorta) if you want to give that a try. If I were you I'd experiment with the WoW, WAR Online, and other various game trials and subscribe to the one you think is worth it.

A private server is your best bet, but nothing will be as good as a solid retail value mmorpg.

A decent 'free' one is runes of magic. Though you can use real money to purchase some items. Other than that, WoW is the standard in MMO right now. If you haven't played it, you're missing out.

Free MMO's really aren't that great, I don't care what anybody says. I've tried a lot of free ones and they were all garbage. The only good free ones I've tried are Guild Wars or Dungeon Runners, neither of which is technically an MMO.

Well they have all free content but you can purchase stuff and access other areas:
Tibia - 2D game with no sound but it's actually pretty awesome game. Grinding is actually fun when there's a giant spider 3 steps behind you that can pretty much two shot you if you're lower level. Why?`Because Tibia is risky. if you die you'll lose hours of XP, skills, magic level, items and one or two pieces of your equipment. (There's no Bind on Pickup items in Tibia. Certain monsters drop certain loot which is why you hunt. It gives xp and with some luck your hunting session will end with lots of gear to sell.) Great game, no level restriction, no instancing, player housing... The only thing it lacks is a good PvP system. (You actually get BANNED if you kill too many innocent people within a certain time limit)
Oh and I know certain games forces you to move around by clicking like D2 but luckily you can use your keyboard to move in Tibia. I really think it's worth trying out, it never gets old seeing a level 200 with speed enchants run past your screen in like two seconds(You run faster with every level).

The other game is FlyFF - pretty cool I guess... Gets boring fast.

Mabinogi, Dragonica, D&D Online, Anarchy Online.. I'd try those. And there are private servers for some older games as well.

Also Free Realms is kinda fun, surprisingly.. AQ Worlds, which is a browser game.. thats not bad either ;)

There's always Guild Wars, but it's not a traditional MMO (and some get tetchy about calling it an MMO at all). Guild Wars is more of a story based game than just endless killing of creatures and collecting pointless bits of grass/logs/rocks, etc, etc. If you want something new and different, with great PvP, a novel use of skills and a story you'll actually want to pay attention to get Guild Wars. Just make sure you get the three main campaigns though (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall). I think you can buy the trilogy as a set these days.

If you're looking for more of a traditional MMO that is pretty much completely free - no subscription and no paying for the game - then you might give Runes of Magic a go. It's actually rather similar to WoW, though obviously most people will say it's not as good. It does come very close to the real thing though :) The only bad thing about Runes of Magic is the lack of good PvP, unless you call being ganked by players in much better armor on a PvP server PvP - that kind of PvP is not impressive to me, however, and certainly is no test of skill. There is hope of battlegrounds being introduced and better world-PvP, however.

The only time you'll need to spend money on Runes of Magic is if you want to. You can get through the game without spending cash, though obviously there is a reason there is a cash shop for the game - to make the experience better for those who pay. So you can buy a mount, or better upgrade material, etc, but like I say...it's not really necessary to spend a cent in order to enjoy the MMO for what it is. There are expansions, a good support team, an active forum for the game and the community on the servers were - by and large - pleasant to play amongst.

Hope that helps.
