Depends if you want themepark or sandbox.

As for the superior and proper mmorpgs but unfortunately overshadowed by the generic themeparks of this generation, the sandbox genre, you could try some of these sandbox:
Vanguard is still up and running although it has a low population and you should expect a rather dead world. Unfortunately, since it was a great great game.
Pirates of the Burning Sea is pretty awesome as well, unique ship combat. Last time I played it, it was a pretty alive. Low population but active world chat.
Final Fantasy 14: From what I've heard, it has improved quite a lot. I was personally looking to get into it but I read a thread on their forums yesterday that showed disturbingly low numbers on the servers. About 200-300 players on their servers was what the thread mentioned, that's scary. Still looking cool though.
Runescape - Haters hatin' on Runescape maybe but Runescape is still awesome and the music is bad***. Very active game but unfortunately the limited resolution can make it hard to accept this game.
Tibia - Great sandbox game, the first and hopefully only community that actually made me quit the actual game. Active community of master-trolls and douchebags and possibly the most power abusing community ever.
