If you enjoy STALKER, I would get STALKER CoP. I am guessing you are talking about playing the first. HL2 if you have not already. Killing Floor is a fun alternative to L4D Also, please give Cryostasis a try. It is a turd to run at max, but it really is a fantastic game. Well if you like games with creepy atmosphere, and a pretty interesting story.I recently started playing alot more pc games, and was looking for some "must play" titles around year 2003-2004 and up. good suggestions. also i'm looking for games less obvious,( I know about games like COD and the elder scrolls)
It really depends on the type of game you enjoy playing. I will throw in The Witcher as a must play in my opinion.tester962Of course how could I forget The Witcher. Really superb game.

Witcher is great. If you want less obvious games that are actually prety good, then Spellforce 2 Gold Edition. That combines RPG with RTS. Good story too. Plays a bit like Titan Quest, which is another awesome game. Rome Total War for a great RTS all out war experience. Many found it much better than the new Empire Total War.
Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines (RPG)
The Witcher (RPG)
Dawn of war 1 (and all the exp packs) (RTS)
STALKER COP (FPS/Survival) (well since you were interrested in stalker this might be redundent to write)
Company of Heroes (RTS)
Counterstrike Source (or any other valve game for that matter) (FPS)
Killing floor (A cheap game, pretty simple, quite entertaining) (FPS)
Neverwinter nights 2 (RPG)
Battlefield 2
these are the ones I remember in the timeframe you asked for, cant remember if OT stated a specific genre :S
I'll try to mention games that no one else has yet.
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Jade Empire
Far Cry
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Battlefield 2
SWAT 4
F.E.A.R.
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Civilization IV
I know it's not 2003/2004 up, but Deus Ex is a must play PC game; I cannot stress this enough.kdawg88
This is true. I played Deus Ex in 2008 and didn't care that it was ten years old, it was an awesome game. In fact it is kind of a shame that in ten years only a handful of games have been able to come close to it in terms of an FPS/RPG hybrid.
Excellent suggestions, i'll be looking at a few of them. I tried gothic 3 as suggested, but the severe lag on my pc makes it anoying to play. Its a shame, could be a great game too.

Risen is a much, much , MUCH better game IMHO.
One absolute must play is Stalker: Call of Pripyat.
And Bioshock 1.

I actually just finished risen, and yes it is a great gameMounts and Blade really surprised me. Although, it's no longer 5 bucks at Steam, but 30.... Not sure, it's worth 30, in that it feels kinda incomplete.ThreesixtyciI might take a look at that, regardless of gamespots score, thanks
I might take a look at that, regardless of gamespots score, thanks I suggest playing vanilla first to get a handle on the basic gameplay then try some mods. The game is real mod friendly. On the main menu there is a pulldown menu that says Native. When you install a Mod in the subfolder called Modules then that pulldown menu will be your source of changing to that new mod; without messing up the files of the original game. Also, works with the Steam version. And for what it's worth, I'm Currently playing a mod called Wedding Dance. I don't really like the idiotic female armor it added (or the nakedness it adds), but I like all the other stuff about it.[QUOTE="Threesixtyci"]Mounts and Blade really surprised me. On second thought... scatch that. Probably be best if you start with a mod, being that the vanilla version really has no focus and it takes a real long time to get to a point where the game gets fun. As in... you having a strong enough party to do anything.

I better get on it, mount & blade warband is coming out in march, if i lke this one maybe i'll pick up the new one too.Machinarium
Mount & Blade/Warbands
Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries -- really hard to find, but it will be releasing for free download in a few months
There are so many games it would be hard to put into an all encompasing list. Having said that here are some standouts from different genres:
FPS/RPG Hybrid: Dues Ex
FPS: Half life 2, Crysis
RPG: Divine Divinity (one of my all time favorites) also Morrowind
RTS: Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, Rise of Nations
That's just what I can think of the top of my head, there are many many others.
Any of the Half-Life 2 games, Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, CSS, World of Warcraft, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Crysis
I'm real picky but these are the games from the last 5 years that any PC gamer should play. Like if you don't hate the genre then the game is amazing.
FPS/RPG: STALKER:SoC (mod it), STALKER:CoP, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (fan patch it)
Adventure: Penumbra Black Plague and Overture (episodes 1 and 2), Mount & Blade (not exactly a pure adventure but its a cross of adventure and RPG), Mount & Blade Warband
RPG: Witcher, Dragon Age: Origins, Judith (indie game that is free: blew me away personally), Torchlight (everyone and their brother will play an ARPG at some point so grab the best one aside from Diablo 2)
FPS:Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament 2004
RTS:Medieval II Total War and Kingdoms, Company of Heroes, Heroes of Newerth

As stated before Mass effect 1 and 2 afterwards. You will thank me that you did and dont rush trough the games.
Those are some good titles. Some of my personal favorites are: Dead Space (Probably the only true scary game I've played. Somewhat jumpy, always keeps you looking back and towards vents, overall one of my favorite games) Killing Floor (1 Word: Zombies. In this game you will encounter hoards of zombies coming at you in waves. The satisfaction of decapitating 3 zombies in a row in slow motion is enough to make me play this game for hours on end, if you like zombie games, get this one.) Modern Warfare 2 (Mostly Self-Explanatory) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (A must play RPG game. You really can't go wrong, and there are so many mods for this that makes it totally different than the X360 Version. If you decide to get this game and want to get yourself some mods, register here and download some mods right away: tesnexus.com) Prototype (One of the most unique games I have ever played. From running up sky scrapers to using a kind of "whip" to bring down and hijack a helicopter to destroying zombies/infected people. Did I mention you can also use the whip to simultaneously slice multiple zombies into halves at the waist?) Bioshock/2 (The two Bioshock games are also very unique. Hell, what other game lets you shoot bees out of your wrist? Or [As in B2] Dice f***ed up atom addicted "people' known as slicers with your enormous drill?) Well, I have to say that's about it for "necessary games" in my opinion. The MOST necessary of those would probably be Dead Space, Killing Floor, and Prototype if you're looking for games that aren't exactly known around the globe (Although All of them have made names for themselves, especially Dead Space). Although they are are EXTREMELY unique. From a Hud-Less over-the-shoulder third person shooter (DS) to getting slow mo head shots on multiple zombies (KF), and even taking down helicopters with a wip (PT), you can't go wrong with those three games. None the less, all the games mentioned above are some of my favorite PC games.I recently started playing alot more pc games, and was looking for some "must play" titles around year 2003-2004 and up. Anything developed by Valve, Relic, Bioware or Crytek
Penumbra trilogy (horror puzzle game)
World in Conflict (fantastic action RTS)
Risen (same devs as Gothic games but much more polished)
Cryostasis (great survival horror type game with fantastic atmosphere and story)
Stalker games (amazing atmosphere, very tense/frightening at times)
F.E.A.R. 1(one of the best horror/fps hybrids on the platform)
Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (great blend of shooting and stealth)
Mafia - even though it is from 2002 it has aged extremely well.
World of Goo
Saints Row 2 - better on consoles, but still a blast
Red Faction: Guerrilla - excellent sandbox game with destructible environments
Battlefield 2 - probably the biggest online FPS on the PC.
I got about ten titles I want to play now, add mafia and riddick to the pileAnything developed by Valve, Relic, Bioware or Crytek
