Just out of interest, as preferably I would like to hook up my soon to be bought PC with the HD TV in my room, but I don't have a desk in it. Just wondered if there were any practical solutions to this (as I will be using it on my bed).

You know that breakfast-board/thing they use in movies to eat their breakfast in bed? Maybe try one of those out? Man, that sounds comfy...

Well at least it's not a "Can my computer run..." question.

I'm not sure how intense your gaming could get in your "comfy" position though.

Well I game in a small arm chair about 8 feet from my wall, where my projector shines a 7 foot screen. I use the Cyber-Sniper gaming pad which is about 4 inch wide, which gives me plenty of room for use of a mouse on a wooden board I place on my knee. It's not very high tech, but it works well for most games that require mouse and keyboard, as the Cyber-Sniper has plenty of buttons on it.

Check out the Cyber Sniper here.

http://www.flexiglow.com.au/products/csGamepad.htm

The only issue is when you need to type something, which I have a keyboard proped up against my chair at the side so I can just lean over and grab it, put it on my lap and type away.

Works great for me, and it's far more relaxing to be able to game away from a computer desk and office chair. Plus I can happily do everything through my PC, no need for a DVD player or Digital box. I also have a Hauppauge WinTV Nova which allows you to plug a digital TV aerial into your PC and watch TV, works with Windows Media Center too.

So yes, it's great playing without a computer desk.

Have fun

I never tried something like that, but you could always use a wooden board to keep both the mouse and keyboard. I have a friend who does that, and he sits on a sofa when he is gaming, so he is comfortable doing that, so maybe you should give it a try.

I have to say, I'm always confused when I speak to my friends, they happily sit at desk with small monitor and crappy chair. Why they don't adopt a similar setup to me, I can't understand, especially when they've all seen my setup and said they love it.

My projector cost £750, which isn't much different to a decent 1280 HD TV and it's native res is 1280x720, so it is HD as well, and I get a 7 foot screen from it. It also accepts HDMI. I use a Sony AW15.

For those out there that use uber high res wide screen monitors and think 1280 is crap, try playing with a 7 foot screen, you will soon change your mind. I've even had a guy that had a 60 inch 1080 TV look at my setup and wish he'd done the same.

If you have the space, as in, you can comfortably sit at least 6 foot from a wall, projectors are the way forward. I could NEVER go back to a normal monitor now, I've spoiled myself.

Have fun

I've always thought one of the high quality -- especially one with gaming in mind -- wireless keyboards with a built-in trackball might work well for kb+m gaming on the HDTV (gamepad of course is no big deal).

I have yet to try it though :P Not to mention I'm by far a much better mouser than trackballer.

My experience with wireless mice or keyboards has been dire to the say the least. A lot of wirelss mice go into sleep while their not being used so you have to wiggle it a little to wake it up. Wireless keyboards have been better but I've still used some that require a couple of key presses when it hasn't been used for some time to wake up.

Not to mention the battery issues. Wired mouse and keyboard are the best option for quick response and avoiding the headache of battery manaegement.

Have fun

I use a Rocketfish keyboard and mouse setup, they are Bluetooth and I have a great time sitting on my couch gaming away the day. The setup cost me $99 US at Bestbuy.

Lol. Anyway, I've been looking around and I can't find any breakfast trays that will be big enough for a KB/M setup. Any more ideas?

Try a 'stable table'. It's basically a flat piece of plastic on a pillow that sits on your lap.

Mate head to Ikea and get yourself a desk. I started off with one of their small ones, and after a couple of months bought the biggest desk available. Big monitor = big desk, especially the depth between you and the screen. Corner tables offer excellent depth. If you want to game in bed, you're better off with a console. Thats just my 2 cents though...

A buddy of mine who does upholstery put together something for me that I like to call a lapdash. Which, actually, is just a fancy name for a piece of wood wrapped in some kind of synthetic leather material. Definitely makes gaming off a desk easier.

I do not use a desk. Most desk chairs give me aches in my back/shoulders after a hour or two. With my new design I have yet to get a sore spot in my back after 8 hours of flight sims.

So I made myself one of the Ackers and Barnes simpits(lost my link to it). A screwless design for a flight sim cockpit(slots together). Takes 2-4x8 sheets of plywood, pencil and a jigsaw. Cost was 90$ for wood(12mm plywood with a finished side) and 40$ for the saw. Same cost as a crap built partical board desk, but will last you a life time. Easier to put together since there are no screws, can be taken apart and put together in two minutes. Gives a place for your rear speakers to mount to. Can build a keyboard tray out of the scrap pieces...

I have since changed it and use:

2x 13inch reach wall mounts for LCD's. One for games other for guages(il-2), tv or webpages when in game.

Car seat fitted between the seat halves of a A&B simpit.

Makes everything clean and tidy. Also saved a lot of room as the whole pit takes up less room than my old desk and chair. LCD(s) can be moved out of the way so you can just walk up to the seat and sit, and pull the diplay back to you. Recline the seat for movies/relaxing...

Next I need to find a nice comfortable powered car seat with arm rests. Maybe from a Caddy or old Monte Carlo, in leather!

My next one is a scaled cockpit of a WW2 plane. Not sure which one yet.

You can make one of them lap trays for cheap. All you need is wood the right size, beans from a bean bag chair, and fabric to hold the beans in place. One stop to the hardware store to buy wood and stapler/screws/glue, next stop fabric store for beans and cover.

Use two pieces of wood the same length and width, but buy one thinner sheet as a cover. Place fabric flat and lay beans/beads on top of cloth. Put wood on top of beans, wrap cloth around the wood and beans. Take second piece of wood, the finshing one and place over the fabric/wood side and staple, screw or glue it down. Now you have a clean top surface and if you bought a nice finishing piece you might not need a mouse pad. Use some plumbers glue(rubber cement) and lock down the keyboard, the glue is removeable as it does not cure to a hardened mass. I have seen people trying to sell these for 50$ when it would cost you less than 20$ and a hour ot make. One thing I noticed is to use spandex(sp?) as the fabric as it will hold shapes, so you can make the bottom more confortable or fit to your lap better.

i did this once on my couch when the power ports in my room went out, i just got a pillow and put that on my lap with the keyboard on it, and a book for my mouse and had it by my side. Probly not the best for long time use. My friends bro uses a piece of wood that goes across his arm chair for gaming, and puts his mouse/keyboard on that.

Gave up my desk to my gurl, and set it up there {see link below}

http://www.geocities.com/cfreeman2k/GameSpace.JPG

Screen is 144", projector is 16feet from the screen. I use gaming chair, and a footstool

for my mouse, and the keyboard tray is my legs.

Play Battlefield 2 is AWESOME, driving or flying almost feels like your inside.

That's a pretty cool setup. I don't need a desk either. I just wade through all the junk and garbage in my house and put my keyboard and mouse at some stable location for the night which is usually on a bag of garbage. As long as the garbage has been there for a while it is usually pretty stable although it smells worse. If it's a fresh bag of garbage then it usually hasn't had time to settle, so it can get annoying if I'm playing an FPS and I need quick reaction time.

And I know, you're probably asking, how could you move your mouse on a garbage bag filled with garbage. Easy. Trackball.

I tried that one time, and i spilled chicken wings all over my keyboard. I didn't clean it up right away and then eventually the keyboard starting failing. Like buttons would press that I wasn't really pressing, and then the computer would start beeping constantly so I had to unplug it.

ah, rookie mistake~! you have to make sure not to get anything on your keyboard, you see. that's what the underwear is for - make sure to wipe your fingers on your underwear before resuming gaming.

Anyone tried the upsidedown gaming position? I heard it's really good for insomniacs, as you tend to pass out after about an hour. No wonder bats can sleep during daytime.
