tomb raider 1 is a brilliant game, even if you have/will have played anniversary, it's definitely worth playing the original tomb raider... it's hardly essential unless you're a fan, but i'd call it a must-own if you like tomb raider
tomb raider 2 has way more gunplay, which is terrible because tomb raider's gunplay sucks - the idea of what a tomb is is quite changed as well, you spend most of your time in urban invironments or things like ships - there's also the annoying matter of being able to save anywhere - F5 kills tomb raider's suspense... and that factor is important... the biggest reason to buy this, besides wanting a complete set, is to see how the series evolved and the kinds of graphical improvements we got
tomb raider 3 is a very back to the roots game, it's much much harder, you've got some utterly beautiful locales, some fun puzzles - lots of tombs, much less of the annoying combat, and a fixed save system (not sure how it works on the pc, but on playstation you could save anywhere, but each save used a consumable gem - a good system) - TR3 is a love or hate game, but the people who love it consider it the best of the series, usually
tomb raider 4 (aka the last revelation) is a great game as far as i'm concerned, it sits somewhere between tomb raider 3 and 2 in terms of style - it adds a lot of cool ideas, expands on the moves lara has available, has a ton of great locations, brings back the bad save system from tr2 (which strangely, didn't spoil the game at all for me this time round), throws in some great original puzzles - and it's all tied together with a more interesting, more involving story
tomb raider 5 (aka chronciles) basically feels like a game that 3 part time testers turned level designers whipped together in a weekend to generate some funds to help the terminally shoite tomb raider 6...some people seem to love it, but i found it to be utterly terrible in all ways
tomb raider 6 (aka the angel of death or some stupid generic title like that) - never played it, never plan on - core went down the toilet some time after tomb raider 4, and everything i've seen and read about this game suggests to me it is one of the worst tomb raiders
tomb raider 7 (aka legend) you've already played it, but i'll throw in my opinion anyway: tripe. there's some great ideas thrown in there, but it was too short (7 hours i think? previous tomb raiders lasted 15-18 ), way too easy (death happens rarely, there's very little challenge either mental or dextrous at any time), and some tedious driving levels that felt like filler
tomb raider 8 (aka anniversary) yet to play it, but it's sitting on my pile - i'll get round to it sometime after never... or after christmas, whichever comes first
to sum up, tomb raider 3 and 4 are the must buys as far as i'm concerned, but tomb raider 1 is also essential for TR fans, and 2 is worth getting if you're interested in how the technology progressed or are just hungry for more - 5, you can (really, really) live without - same with 6, but at least with 6 you have a technological step-up, which might be worth checking out
You should definitly pick up TR 2 it is marvelousBaron_14
Yeah, no kidding, I thought 2 was alot of fun :D
Using mfsa's list, I'd probably rank them something like this: 1,2,8,7,4,3,5,6
But, to be fair, if I were to play them for them all for the first time today, I might rank them differently. I played Tomb Raider 1 back when it was first released (DOS game), and none of others have come close to the awe and fun I had back then ;)
Ok i think i will pickup 1,3 and 4.Which one should i play first?Zillaschool

You must get TR2. I would suggest you get all the four first games and play them in order. Don't play other games while you're into them and you'll forget about the graphics soon enough! They are all very difficult games by today's standars so don't be afraid to use a walkthrough. They all have their unique elements to them but TR2 gets my vote for favourite TR game.
mfsa you should really try Anniversar. It's really great in its own special way, although it would have been better without the combat it just feels in the way. Also, I never had any problems with the old controls while the new are sort of relative to your viewpoint. The upside of the game is that the visiuals are really pretty and the puzzles really well designed and expanded upon. There are some really beautyful moments in the game, especially scenes with water
TR2 is killer.. what's not fun in scalling the Great Wall?! Too much gun play? umm.. sure.. it was too many traps.. moreso than the first game..
Not to mention that TR2 was the first game to ever have a nude mod for it.. (yes I stooped that low back in the day.. oh hell I stoop that low even with my GTS:SA Hot Coffee mod.. :P)
mfsa you should really try Anniversar.
kyrieee
i honestly do intend to play it at some point, but i have the ps2 version, and i have a couple other games on ps2 i need to play through first, like ico and shadow of the colossus - but with games like hellgate and the witcher and call of duty 4 coming so soon, i just don't think i'll have time for my playstation 2
i'll play it sometime though - i guess i'll give tomb raider 2 a replay too... i still have it for PS1...i didn't like it when it came out, when i was about 13 - maybe i'll like it now, though... i really found the combat tedious... but i guess for the price it can probably be bought for now, there's no harm in buying it - it's definitely worth pocket change
