I get explorer crash whenever i right click an icon or any .exe everything else on computer works fine i can play games, surf, ect..

I booted with Vista dvd and picked repair and says found no errors. I found a way to do test with Dos in admistrator but since i can't right click i can't do admistrator. And i checked version of explorer using RUN and WINVER and it says 6?? So went to microsoft to get 7 and says i already have that installed?? My computer says 6 and microsoft says 7. Was thinking maybe try explorer 8 Beta but don't like anything Beta.

Everything is fully updated on this computer and completely virus scanned and spyware scanned. I haven't added new hardware since i bought this thing over a year ago, it still boots up fast.

The error shows as APPCRASH explorer.exe

Apart for completely formatting and starting from scratch i have no idea... Any help?

I can confirm my explorer shows as version 6 which doesn't make sense since Vista installs 7. WHats best way to fix this because microsoft sees it as 7.

You're better off reinstalling Vista. No need to reformat. When you install just let vista install. It will backup you're files and stick it in a file got windows.old. Once finished just copy you're files to you're user documents. It will copy you're programs too but they will be unusable after you've reinstalled vista so you will have to download programs and install. You can create a personal backup and I recomend you to do it. It will only backup the files in you prifile account documents whatever you call it and save it to you're hard drive in the main directory. I recomend saving any network drivers so you can connect to the internet.

Didn't realise you mean't Internet explorer I thought you mean't windows Explorer. In that case use IE8 if that doesn't work use firefox. Firefox is far better anyway.

Damn it is windows explorer so was getting confused with internet explorer. Guess i'm screwed. I went to microsoft to ask for help and starts taking about charges just to send an email. Gotta love Mocrosoft.

So reinstall is my only option? Have alot of games and utils hate to have to reinstall all that stuff.

This is error i get.. http://img250.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=79639_Capture_122_502lo.JPG

Okay the just reinstall. You won't get any help with that other than to just reinstall. Like I said it will backup you're personal files and programs to windows.old but you will need to reinstall the programs but you will need to redownload. I've had the same problem about a year ago. I got no help whatsoever and I can solve most problems on my own. I suggest you backup just in case. Vista will installl over the top. Good luck.

BTW the windows.old file is on the C: drive most likely. Once you've copied you're files back you can delete the windows.old because it takes up space. But don't forget to copy you're file out of it first.

Try uninstalling games before you retry vista. If it works then research securerom. If you install vista and it happens again then its something you've installed thats causing the crashes.

Yeah, like the helpful two guys above you posted - it sounds like something that you installed inserts an option that pops up when you right click, the way AV will have a 'scan this file' or WinZip/WinRAR will have an 'unzip/zip this file' option, and one of those extensions is causing a crash for you.

Thanks guys its solved :D The first link from LordXenigma brought me to a problem with command and conquer wrath which i have installed and has a repair utility which fixed my problem. In a million years would of never guessed a game i've had for a long time and play alot would be the cause.

I'll warn my friends about this that play cc3 with me.

Thanks again guys glad this really annoying problem is gone.
