Ive got Unreal Tournament 3 which wont let me save my progress due to no account connection.

Battlefield 2142 which wont let me play the game AT ALL without an internet connection as well.

I bought a computer not to long ago and then purchased those along with a few other PC games only to my dismay finding out that yo had to have an internet connection to even play.

I get irritated at how the industry expects you to "log in" so they can verify you before you can buy a game you bought.

Its sort of like how most xbox games dont have splitscreen anymore because playing online is the norm now. =/

Anyone else being screwed over by this? (I have a net connection now obviously but i was without one for 3 months or so)

I can understand the frustrations, but since i'm always connected to the internet it doesn't bother me atall. It's 2009, games will only become more and more dependant on an internet connection in the future.

The offline account still requires an internet connection so they can verify the account first before letting you return offline with it.

He wasn't talking about Steam.

I'm not annoyed by this problem, if internet wasn't so popular such methods wouldn't have been adopted. Sure there was a time when I had dial up but obviously at that time, internet registration wasn't required, you only needed internet if the game had multiplayer, but broadband was available almost everywhere when games started to register online.

And UT 3 and BF 2142 are purely multiplayer, not single player, so it isn't that weird.

yes it does

You are both correct! It DOESN'T require it after being patched. It DOES require it vanilla, straight out the box.

UT3 isn't purely multiplayer it has a singleplayer campaign. No matter how unimpressive the campaign is, it's still there.

Well, piracy has been around for as long as I can remember (29 year old gamer here) and I find it quite puzzling that only in recent years have game publishers resorted to DRM software included in games. They're not very good measures though since it proves to be more of an inconvenience to actual paying customers. I guess some publishers would rather attempt to do something to protect their games rather than just take things lying down however futile it may be. I mean, Dawn of War 2 just came out and no less than a day later, the torrents are all filled up with seeders and leechers getting their hands on a cracked Dawn of War 2 and playing it to completion (SP campaign). What to do, what to do? Hmmm.......

What are you talking about? DRM software has been around since near the start of PC gaming. Only recently it has become invasive though.

Let me throw some recommendations of games that require no online (Farcry 2 does by the way because of securom). Duke 3D Half-Life (steam in offline mode or a disc version) Doom II Heretic Hexen Quake 4 Serious Sam First and Second Encounters Painkiller: Black Edition Rise of the Triad Keep in mind most of those are old so if you have a problem with old graphics then it's a no-go but trust me when I say the best shooters require absolutely no online. Check out http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/, their main philosophy is once the game is downloaded its yours with absolutely no drm (online activation) and unlimited redownloads.

Have Doom 1 and 2 for the xbox an I think duke 3d around here somewhere. Played serious sam. hexen and heretic. Have half life 2 on the 360 :P Only ones id go for are rise of the triad and painkiller. seriously...a weapon that fires shurikens and lightning. It could only be more awesome if it had boobs and was on fire.

I've always felt that a single player game should requre no internet access at all to play, ever. That's kind of the point of single player.

I would very much love to see that games requires online activation rather than DRM installation like, securom or starforce etc. as some one already said, it's 2009 and basic 256kbps internet connection is must for any gamer. Singleplayer games don't need internet to play but the game activation/ownership check needs it.

I made the topic. Obviously some people dont or dont always have it available. Just because its the majority doesnt mean you should make a rule purely for the majority. Pirates may have another hoop to jump through but thats not going to stop them. To be perfectly blunt I support the idea of "piracy" because of the fact that so many companies get away with so much. But im not going to turn this into a piracy debate. There are plenty of topics about that.

I would mind it...only if piracy wasn't a big deal with games these days. I mean, you can get a game online through torrents and then get a virtual drive and boom, there you go. Free game. I think EA is a little TOO ridiculous on their DRM on the BF games though, it's almost murderous. I wasn't able to play BF2142 for about 4 months after I purchased it, and what really sucked, is that I played it. As soon as I was in game for about 20 minutes, I realized that I freaking hated it. For me, that game sucked.

But I think many gamers will support my point of view - Its always better to have Internet-activation scheme instead of crappy software-based DRM scheme. Though Steam has few disadvantages, still it's a right direction imo.

Unfortunately, the internet activation DRM IS crappy software based DRM. SecuROM is used in most of these internet check/ limited activation games. Steam is also a software based DRM scheme. Try playing your game without Steam running. You can play without the internet (offline mode) but not without Steam running. In other words, you are making a differentiation that doesn't exist. Internet activation = software based DRM.

Yes and I also hate the so many "activations" thing.

DRM punishes people like me who acctually buy the game. I am thinking about getting cracked versions of any game that does DRM from now on as a boycott.

I don't really mind - but I think that the Internet connection should only be required when the single player game is installed - not for actual playing.

I understand the frustration of single player games needing it, but the two you mentioned are the least single player games i can think off. I mean Counter-Strike Condition Zero had more single player than BF 2142 (UT3 at least tried for a story and a campaign).

The games you mentoined are primarily online only games so i don't see a huge problem with them needing an internet connection to play. But i can understand why you are angry.

But i will say if you spent money on BF 2142 just to play single player it wasted it... Even if you spent .99 cents you wasted it. It is like throwing a brick at a horse... It may sound fun until you actually try it out and then you will just regret it...

@ Agent_Kaliaver Well i bought battlefield 2142 for bot play primarily. The "single player" portion of it. Thats why i wanted the game itself. I got tired of modern warfare games (ironically i recently got into CoD 4 though) and wanted something a bit more futuristic. Exhausting Metroid 1 and 2, I turned to 2142. But as the others said ill probably just find a no cd crack and single player crack. Then ill be golden. By the way i do not classify those as illegal since ive already got the game in hand and the games installed. (Now im just lazy to dig it out of my moving boxes.)

This. I will embrace this mechanism any day rather than securom. and Securom doesn't need internet connection. Did you try to run Mass Effect or other securom-enabled games without internet connection? They check for original DVDs and emulation softwares.

By the way i do not classify those as illegal since ive already got the game in hand and the games installed. (Now im just lazy to dig it out of my moving boxes.)sharpshooter188

The reason i pointed it out was that there is barely anything in BF 2142. They only let you play like 4 maps with a max of 16 bots (there are like 11 maps in game and can have a total of 64 players in game). It would have been better to get a pirated version. That way you wouldn't spend money on how cheap EA really is. I however own the game and connect to the internet all the time so i am ok with it.

If i were you i would have went classic with BF 1942. It isn't modern and they actually let you play more than 4 maps. You can get this changed with a mod however. It allows you to play with more people, but i don't know if they let you play anymore maps...

[QUOTE="Gamartto"][QUOTE="-Feath-"] ... but since i'm always connected to the internet it doesn't bother me atall. It's 2009, games will only become more and more dependant on an internet connection in the future.arijit_2404
This.

This. I will embrace this mechanism any day rather than securom. and Securom doesn't need internet connection. Did you try to run Mass Effect or other securom-enabled games without internet connection? They check for original DVDs and emulation softwares.

Mass Effect (protected by SecuROM) needed an internet connection to initially activate it. That's one of the options it offers to publishers, apparently. It can be configured to require internet activation, internet connections, limit the number of activations... all kinds of things. In the case of Mass Effect, they were originally planning to make it reauthenticate with the servers at least every 10 days, requiring an internet connection. They backed off on that, at least. As it stands, you can run it after that, you don't even need the disc in the drive, but you do have to have that connection initially. So, looks like we're getting both the internet required activation AND SecuROM, all in one tidy little package. Sucks, doesn't it?

yeah, it sucks to get kicked in the butt twice for the same thing. I hated Bioware for ME despite of thier great works in the past. But given the chance, I would prefer Internet activation rather than securom.

[QUOTE="sharpshooter188"]@ Agent_Kaliaver Well i bought battlefield 2142 for bot play primarily. The "single player" portion of it. Thats why i wanted the game itself. I got tired of modern warfare games (ironically i recently got into CoD 4 though) and wanted something a bit more futuristic. Exhausting Metroid 1 and 2, I turned to 2142. I played it before. I was also eh with it. Well basically my little eras of gaming went as such Modern day (Counter strike) then WW2 (Day of Defeat) then modern day (Counter strike source) then from there moved on to WW2 (call of duty 2) then futuristic and now a toss up between games like 2142 and cod 4. But Like you said though. Ill probably just download a crack so i dont need the stupid internet connection and have to dig out the friggen cd every single time i want to play.. ugh.

[QUOTE="sharpshooter188"]

Well not all games are like that only few ( unfortunatelly that number grows though ). Besides you choose all multiplayer oriented games . But i do agree they should had let you play without internet even though are multiplayer games

world of starcraft made me laugh :) nice one

That sucks! I have BF2142 but I can't play online because my internet connection sucks. The worst is sometimes I can't connect to internet at all. And that sucks! :(
