I'm trying to figure out if the only reason is because of dual core instead of quad. I have a 3.0ghz c2d, 5850, 4gb ram, and I've tried everything but nothing helps the stutter. I have tried lowering the settings, setting view/detail distance to 10, nothing works it is still not fun to play.

the 1.7 patch is great and solves most the stuttering if you put the settings low enough

It's on Steam so yes it is automatically patched. I've also tried defragging.

Why wouldn't it stutter? It's GTA IV we're talking about.

The game is more CPU dependent than GPU... You have a great GPU, but a 3GHz C2D is less than what they recommend (a 2.4GHz Quad Core CPU)... The game eats performance... So you need a meaty system to run it well and C2D isn't the best for running it...

I had an e6750, 8800GTS 640mb combo when I first played GTA4 and it ran like ass... Then I upgraded my 8800 to a GTX 260 and OC'd my e6750 to 3.2GHz and it still ran like ass...

Then I upgraded that e6750 to a q9550 and I can max the game now with no stuttering at all... Just need a LOT of power...

I use the 1.0.4.0 patch and it runs ok on all high except render quality is set to highest. Shadow density is like 16 and I think I have view distance at 50, detail distance at 60 and vehicle density at 34. And the resolution is set to 1680x1050.

I use

AMD Athlon X2 5200+ 2.7 ghz.

2 gig DDR2 800mhz RAM

8800GT OC

back to TC, not trying to sound harsh, but here's the deal with GTA4.....there are games extremely GPU demanding such as crysis and crysis:WH, there are also games extremely CPU demanding such as red faction:G and amraII, but GTA4 is one of those kind that is heavily taxing on both, even your system ram and harddrive will matters in fps counts.

some solution you may find useful.

shortcut - time to upgrade

or turn shadow to medium/low, disable nightshadow. water to medium.

also run in windows XP will have 15-20% fps increase

8800GT doesn't even have enough Vram to play on high texture, so is your screenshot, and you know it too

GTAIV for pc.... you might as well give a tampon to an old man.

It's the worst port ever. don't ever expect to get good graphical quality out of it.

Speak for yourself, the game always ran fine for me. Only problem I ever had was with the multiplayer.

The game looked and ran pretty well for me through 1.0.5. Once 1.0.6 hit, my framerate dropped like a rock.

Yes it does.

I just unlock the limiter.

It plays just fine on high textures.

Those screenshots were taken with my 8800GT.

If you don;t want to unlock the limiter then you can just set everything to low and then have only textures at high. Once you are in the game switch textures to low and everything else to high and the texture render to highest and it will not change the textures until you reset the game and all the other settings will be high now.
