Valve haven't been very open about the subject of Episode 3 and its incredible delay. I've always hoped that Half-life 3 would be announced and that would be the project being worked on currently; I refuse to accept all this time has been spent on a single episode. Does anyone else believe Valve could pull a surprise here?

Don't forget that there was nearly thirteen months between episodes one and two.
And they've been pretty open about the fact that episode three is going to be the final episodic update.

If they're going to announce HL3, it'll be after we get a date for ep. 3.

They're going to announce that Half Life 2 Episode 3 is taking them too long, so to shorten development time they're splitting it into 3 episodes which they can release yearly due to the shorter development time involved in episodic content.

Hopefully it's being worked on simultaneously; I realise the space between episode one and two was 13 months but we haven't even been given a date yet and it's approaching two years.

Some people reckon they're going to use a new engine for episode 3 but I think that'd be kind of pointless - they should keep episode 3 under the same engine and release HL3 under a new engine!

If the concept art is any indication, Episode 3 is going to be vastly different to anything we've seen before in Half-Life 2. I guess that's why it's taking so long...but yeah, I'm fairly sure that we're going to end up with an epic, lengthy finale to the HL2 story arc.

and that is all we know about it really.

Episode three will come out next year probably and will not be HL3. And it will use an updated source engine like every other episode, not a new engine.

Are they working of HL3 ? Could be

It won't be HL3.

But it may be a full length game called HL2: episode 3.

There is a very good chance that they are working on a new engine, and writing the script for HL3.

This alone makes it worth the wait. They're implementing sign language for an unidentified deaf Resistance soldier that Alyx had a crush on. He is coming back, and there is a good chance that we are going to see an awkward love triangle with the deaf guy, Alyx, and Gordon.

IMO the source engine holds up very well, TF2 and L4D are beautiful games and even HL2 still looks good to this day. The engine is however showing it's age in texture quality. On the topic of physics, Episode 2 had some pretty massive physics i.e. the bridge collapsing in the beginning and the houses being destroyed in the end by strider fire.

The requirements wouldn't even have to be too much higher. We all know how well implemented and optimized the Valve engines are, and it's not like we're asking for graphics better than Crysis. Just give the texture quality a big upgrade and then do slight upgrades of everything else and they'd be fine.

They're probably improving the source engine, not making a new one from scratch. Remember when HL 2 Episode 2 came out, it was running on the Source Engine 2007, so they might be working on an updated source engine that would probably run their future games well too.

So, we'll have the GoldSrc engine, Source engine, Source 2007 engine, and Source *insert year here*, engine. Wow.

theres no doubt they will upgrade the engine with ep3 but i highly doubt we will see a huge major overhaul in the engine they like to keep there requirements low and personally i don't look at game like tf2 and l4d and say eww ugly :P

Duh where have you been? Also companies can't upgrade existing engines like Valve and Blizzard to make the visuals better. They have to make an entire new engine that cost a lot more money than their old engine did and stop profiting off their old engine.

they do actually they add to the immersion factor and do make games more fun to play altough its not the most important thing when it comes to what makes it game fun but it defiantly adds to it.

Or they have teams assigned to particular projects and unreleased projects are still being worked on/polished.

I wish they would just finish it, the wait isn't what gets me angry but more the fact that you make something in such a way that it ends with a cliffhanger and then twiddle your thumbs making the last part? At this rate they could have put out Half-Life 3 (just all 3 episodes as one large game)...

Well, a source engine upgrade for the next episode may be inevitable but HL3'll most probably be built from down under ( If we ever see the light of it anytime soon ). The source engine is doing pretty well even today and as Doug Lombardi said in an interview, "gameplay is king, performance is second and graphics are somewhat after that."

Just as long as Valve focuses on more in-depth gameplay, I'm satisfied enough as it is. Some gamers have just become graphics whore's in a time like this and forgot the wonders of gameplay.

Well i was surprised too but all i hope is a big surprise as long as it doesnt ruin the half-life saga its fine for me but even i havent played any of the episodes because im just waiting a real episode pack, (just in case that episode 3 is final) and well maybe theres a dawn for a half-life 3.

Valve should be working very hard on something just to not give so much information, valve has been an excellent company so we cant wait the worst neither we just have to wait and wait.

Well, I distinctly remember Valve stating that "going episodic" would allow for sooner release times...
