It arrives in less than a month.

https://www.paradoxplaza.com/battletech/BTBT01GSK-MASTER.html?medium=search&source=search-precis&content=text-ad&term=aqc&campaign=batt_pt_pre_search-precis_us_20180227_pla&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImLTH9tyX2gIVECOBCh0G5Q1xEAAYASAAEgIuC_D_BwE

I haven't played a good mech game in years. I understand this one is game play somewhat similar to large scale XCOM. Which is fine by me. I even backed "Phoenix Point," which comes out at the end of the year. (similar game play, but I think closer to XCOM than Battletech)

From what I have seen of this game it looks really cool. From what I can see you don't really need a super computer to run it well, though it recommends a lot of system RAM. I guess because of the large levels? I have the recommended amount, but I haven't seem many games rec 16gb before.

I think there is also a Battletech (or similar theme) game coming that actually puts you in the cockpit again. Maybe that was a new Mech Warrior game I was reading about. I don't remember, but I don't think it was coming out soon though.

Anyway, what do you guys think about it?

I’m a backer of it, but unfortunately I’m a bit let down by the sub-par presentation. The battles look boring and dead, and the environments are static.

@MirkoS77: How are the environments static? I've seen buildings and other structures collapse from mechs walking on them, I even see trees reacting to the forces created by missiles exploding.

Yes you're talking about MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries it is stated to release in December 2018

I think the new Battletech game look ok but I agree it looks a little brown and muddy. The Shadowrun series (the devs previous games) were a bit bargain basement so I would hold out too much hope but I would like to be surprised.

It comes down to does it play well/is it fun? Time will tell. Although it is kind of hard to find a measured/unbiased opinion on the interwebs these days (in the press at least).

The new mech 5 game looks a generation out of date graphically and too shiny and contrasty like a 3d cartoon. Also. No head bob so it looks like your on skates.

I actually enjoyed Shadowrun Returns. I didn't play the expansions/followups but I heard they were even better. It was one of their earlier titles with much less resources/experience/team size/budget than Battletech, and I enjoyed that one.

As far as Mech 5, yeah I have to agree on those 2 problems. I just watched another video on it. Hopefully that will be addressed, and improved by the time the game actually launches.

@Lach0121: Devs do not understand how important head bob is. SO many games don't even think about it but it makes a world of difference and in a Mech game it's inexcusable imho. That's why I never touched Mechwarrior Online. Also it looks ugly and a number of other things.

The best feature of the new Battletech game for me is feet that fit to the angle of the landscape. MWO looks so crap to not have this.

I'm guessing you can expect something in the line of of the 3 last Shadowrun games. Good gameplay mechanics layed down under a good script, but nothing stellar in term of engine and visuals.

Shadowrun always struck me as being developed with mobile devices in mind, and i get the feeling this is no exception.

@lucidique: Not with the amount of RAM it is recommending. I don't see how it is made in mind for mobile. Shadow run I agree with you on though.

I meant the visuals as well as 3d models.

As for system requirements or consumption, i don't have a clue. I don't work at their studio.

This is boring:

There's something that needs to be done, it's just dead. I've seen mechs hit with a barrage of missiles while in forests and barely had the trees affected. With that degree of firepower (considering how massive and durable the mechs are), trees should be flattened for quite a ways around it. When there's a miss, the ground should significantly deform, be on fire, with craters, etc. I mean, we're talking mechs here, these are massive beasts, yet they feel like toys. Presentation is crucial in any mech game above all else because of the necessity of the conveyance of weight and power. If that's absent, they're not fun to play. The landscape should be smoldering and extremely torn up after an engagement.

@lucidique: which is unfortunate, as being a mech game, mass destruction and violence is the name of the game. To have it be an afterthought robs it of any real satisfaction.

@MirkoS77: When you've pointed out all that stuff I agree now, they should have had more destruction and environmental detail added. I wonder if this was left out because of a lack of resources but looking at Phoenix Point which has crowdfunded less money than Battletech has some pretty destructible environments. I'm wonder what Creative Assembly would do if they were givin the task of making a Battletech strategy game.

Now to you mention it Jackamomo, the MechWarrior 5 2016 reveal looks a bit better graphically than the recent builds. As for the headbob it should be there since in Polygon and IGNs gameplay demonstrations they were in it. I do hope the game gets a graphical upgrade since its running on UE4 it shouldn't look like its barely better than MechWarrior Online. The got about 8 months to do it assuming the game doesn't get delayed 2019. If it doesn't improve significantly graphically at least they game will have mod support so someone is going to make a graphics mod for the game.

@MirkoS77: I just remembered this game called Phantom Brigade, its a turn based strategy game with mechs what do you think of it? The destruction certainly looks more flashy than Battletech

Interesting. I will keep an eye on it as well. Thanks for that post!

@NoodleFighter: Absolutely. While I don't much care for the brighter aesthetic and style, that's far better in terms of destruction and granting a much more visceral, impactful encounter. Even then I'd up it a bit. I want not only good effects, but to see mechs get absolutely rocked with hits. Staggering, getting knocked off their feet completely, getting back up on them slowly while they're on fire, sparks flying, mini-explosions, smoldering. The whole works.

Am I excited? Hell motherfu---

In all seriousness, I am excited because it's a Battletech/mech game that isn't a god damn gundam/mecha anime inspired nonsense.

With that said, it does look a little muddled in a strictly visual sense. But, if the gameplay is on par with the turn-based tactical stuff of XCOM and if it's as good as the Shadowrun titles they made previously, it will be a great game.

@NoodleFighter: Looks cool, but if it's a choice between flashy visuals and shallow gameplay, or the shallow visuals and deep gamepaly of Battletech, I will choose the latter. Not saying the former won't have deep gameplay, but this concern over trees not being destroyed and complete lack of discussion about the dozens of variables that seem to go into lining up a shot is worrisome to me from my peers.

On that note, does anyone remember Heavy Gear? Great mech game, the mechs were smaller, more like big exoskeletons in a sense, but still a lot of fun!

I hope between Battletech, Phantom Brigade, and the one or two non-mecha (aka, dancing Japanese robots with annoying pilots) mech games out there we see a revival in this subgenre/aesthetic.

Maybe a new SHOGO game, hmmmmm? That'd be pretty dope, too.
