Yeah, what is this ancient "Dos" i speak of?

I really want to play some of the old stuff but technically XP doesn't have DOS.. it simulates it.

I've heard of DOSBOX which apparently emulates (don't worry gamespot, we're talking about shareware and freeware) DOS to be able to run those games. But for whatever reason I could mount the destination folder, but I'm stuck on what to do afterwards.

Does anyone know how I could go about getting these old dos games to work, not necessarily through this program but maybe another?

DOSBOX is the best bet. All you do is install it, dump your stuff in it's fake HDD folders. If the game has an installer, run it... if it just has an executable run that. It works great.

I like to use DOSBOX with the D-FEND interface. Makes things much simpler than the command-line crap.

Dos Box is your best bet mate. I spent a whole load of time researching how to get them to work and it really is the best program. It is really easy to learn how to use it. Once downloaded you can use wikipedia to help you understand how to put commands into the interface to get the games working. I have used Dosbox numreous times in the pat to play Quake and Doom.

+1 for DOSBox, command interface isn't too tricky to learn, make sure to read the readme carefully as always.
