Anyone still have an 8800 card under their wing?

I bought this 8800GT in July of 2008 and it's still running fine. It maxes out most games at 1280x1024 without a sweat.

Let us be frank: The GeForce 8800 series was the best line of video cards that Nvidia ever produced. I still hear about 8800GTX's from 3.5 years ago running most games pretty well.

I don't know when the GeForce 8800 will finally be laid to rest, but that is fine by me. I get to spend less money on hardware and more on games instead. Remember when there was time when most cards go obsolete after two years?

You are right in saying that it was a great card for it's time. No one should argue with you on that. Playing games at 1280x1024 should make games pretty easy to run on that card. That's a low resolution for today, but homnestly there really are advantages to gaming with a screen that has tha as it's native res. Games can look great without the jaggies. I remember until 2008 I was still using my 7600gt before it died, and my native res for my 17" monitor was 1024x768.

So yeah long story short that was a beast of a card that still performs well today, and if you stick with that res then it will keep playing strong for a while.

I also remember the time in the late nineties when you had to replace graphics cards every 1.5-2 years because games would no longer support them. It was the time of the first and 2nd generation 3D cards (Voodoo 1/2, PowerVR, Riva TNT etc). Nowadays you can go without replacing the video card for at least 3 years.

My 8800GT gave out on me last June and was hitting really hot temps while running idle. Replaced it with my GTX 275 and haven't looked back, but I have an old 7800GT that is still running strong even though it isn't used for gaming. Although, for my 8800GT I am wondering if I replace the heatsink with something better if that might help it along.

Iam still rocking my 8800GT, it has served me well especially when you consider that when iam not gaming its still working away with Folding@Home! I think though iam going to upgrade it within the next 3-4 months.

we had an 8800gts 640 for 2 years before moving on to a gtx 275 in one PC (which had the 8800gts in it) and got a 4850 for the otehr pc (after selling the 8800gts and my 9500gt to pay for it).

i have it on another pc and its still maxing out all games at 1280 res. !!

I have a 8800gts 320mb. Got it in march of 2007 and it maxes every game at 1680x1050 except Crysis and some RTS games (but that might be my low end CPU keeping it down). I'm not going to upgrade it until i can barely run games on low because it is completely pointless to upgrade when i can already max pretty much everything at the resolution i want.

I still have a 8800GTS 320 that I bought in August of 2007. Still waiting for the right time to upgrade.

I built my current rig around a BFG 8800GT 512 OC in May 2008. It started acting up last September so I replaced it with a GTX 275. But it would handle everything I threw at it at a modest 1680 1050. I was late to the party but it was still one of the best cards I've had.

summer 08' got my 8800gt OCX in SLI, and still running strong, great with my phenom II 940 deneb. holding out for a significant price drop in gt400 series cards.

I still have my 8800 GTX bought it the day of release still rocks but im waiting to see if fermi will kick ass then i will definetly buy a new one

I am just about to retire my 8800 GTS, it is starting to struggle with some titles. It was a great card, but its time to move on with my 5850.

I had an 8800gt in november but got a 260gtx, that 8800gt was the best video card I have ever owned and the 260 while outperforming it will never trump it.

My gtx 295 recently failed on me and I had to switch back to my 8800gt, I didn't even get around to sending back the gtx 295 for atleast a month simply because I was doing fine with the 8800gt, I love this card.

Still rockin a 8800 GTS 512 MB (G92). Its showing its age but still gets the job done. Bought it around two years ago I think. I want to upgrade to a nvidia DX11 card.

Still using my 8800GT I got back in Feb 08. Even though I recently upgraded everything else in my rig, I saw no reason to bother replacing my video card yet as it still handles everything I can throw at it just fine. Hopefully the new Nvidia cards will really drive down the price on the ATI 5XXX series so I'll have a reason to finally retire this thing. Or better yet, give me a reason to get one of the new Nvidia cards.

I've still got my 2 800GTS 512 cards. They run pretty much everything maxed out on my 22" screen (1680 x 1050). One overclocks pretty good, the other doesn't. So I can't overclock them sadly, but that's ok since it's not really needed. Only games I have that I can't max out are Crysis and STALKER (Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat). I wish these cards had a gig of memory on them, they'd be perfect then. With being out of a job right now and no need to even worry about having to upgrade my cards, I don't see why I can't get another year or two out of them. I've had them since Feburary of 2008 and they still work pefect.neatfeatguy

Funny. The only two video games I can't max out with my current setup is Clear Sky and Crysis. Clear Sky runs at 15-20 FPS with all the settings maxed out at 1280x1024. Crysis runs a little better (though I keep the shaders only on "high").

There haven't been enough games that really push the envelope as of late. I don't know if Fermi will be a worthy upgrade, but we'll see...

Yup, those days are over. You could blame it on consoles, but for some reason making even relatively simple games nowadays seems to cost way more then it did 10 years ago when devs were always pushing the technology envelope. I would say, my 8800 will last me quite a few more years X_X Yup, those days are truely over.

I had a 8800 gts 640mb since aug 07 on my second pc and I was happy with the card until it died on me sept 09, it was a good card but it ran too hot, I replaced it with a radeon HD 4890 because they were cheaper.

Bought my 8800 GTX EVGA on the day of release and it's still going strong. It's gone through 2 motherboard changes on an AMD platform and an upgrade to LGA 1366.
