I didn't see you mention any memory sticks. Get a i7 920 instead of 940. I'm also assuming that 5870 can fit into this particular mid-tower? Alternatively you may consider getting an AM3 AMD build along with a 5970(if you can find one), which will offer superior gaming performance.

Get a 920/930, don't waste money on the 940.

Do you really need 850watts? unless your going to crossfire, you will be fine with 650-700watt, and even thats being considerate.

I take it you're looking at the corsair dominator DIMMs? If so get these instead. Lower CAS, lower voltage, and lower price. They're superior in every way.

As others have said, you don't need an 850w PSU for that rig. However, imo, if you see yourself moving to crossfire in the future and/or adding in water cooling, I'd keep the 850w around. It doesn't suck up any extra juice unless it needs it, and in fact a larger power supply will probably need less electricity from your electrical outlet since PSUs are most efficient at around 50% capacity. So really the only downside to getting a larger PSU than you need is that you spend more money in the initial investment that could have gone to upgrade a different part instead.

As for case size, yes, I'd get a full size tower if I were you. Mid towers look nicer, they're cheaper, lighter, and there's more of a selection to choose from, but the downside to all that is you'll always have to worry about the latest GPUs and high end heatsinks no fitting into the case. A full size tower may be more expensive and take up more room, but it will also engulf anything you put in it. The cases I'd suggest looking at would be the HAF-932, PC-P80 (expensive though, may be out of your price range), ATCS 840, Cosmos S, and TJ10. If you want t go water cooling instead then look into the TJ07 and Corsair 800D as well (however, it doesn't look like you're interested in water cooling but I thought I'd throw those two in anyway just in case). I've actually got a thread about cases on this board on either the first or second page of threads that pretty much lists out the pros and cons I found for a lot of those cases so have a look if you're interested.

Finally, the thor's hammer is good, but I'd go with the megahalems instead. It's one of the best air cooling solutions on the market and comes with the enormous benefit of not needing a lapping. Prolimatech designed the thing to fit most CPUs without lapping and have made quite a point about warning people not to lap the CPU or megahalems since it will result in poorer performance and void the warranty.

edit: oh yeah and ditch the i7 940. The 920 and 930 overclock extremely well and render buying any other i7 aside from the 980x a waste of money. You can easily hit 4GHz+ with those two CPUs. And of the two I'd recommend going with the 930 since it's only $10 more and gives you another 140Mhz on the base clock. Also, if you have a microcenter nearby you can pick it up for $200 which puts it within spitting range of the AMD X4 prices.
