I need to get a new laptop and I was thinking of getting a Dell XPS but I've heard some mixed things about them, are they any good?

My budget would be about £1500 max, are there any better laptops out there I should get? What about Alienware?

Are they comfortable to use?

A bit more info would be good. Which XPS are you looking at? What do you need it for? I have a Dell XPS M1330 13" notebook and it's absolutely fantastic for what I need. Your needs could be completely different.

How about a laptop such as this? I don't own any Dell XPS laptops, just a few Inspirons... but what laptop XPS model are you interested in the most?

I have been looking at laptops and this one seems to be the best bang for the buck.

I have an XPS M1730 (with a single 8700M GT), and to be honest I regret the purchase.

I've spent more time on the support line for this computer than I have on every other product I've ever bought combined. And they are usually not able to help. Sometimes they try to get me to pay extra for the 'good' support (even though I've already supposedly paid for support)

That includes spending Christmas day on the phone with support (when it was 2 weeks old at most) because the screen wouldn't display -- just 'cause I had updated my nVidia drivers. Even with Dell's recommended drivers, it sometimes detects phantom monitors and either screws up the screen resolution or doesn't display at all.

The audio controls (at least with Vista) are so bad that I can't record on it like I intended to. In fact, I couldn't even get audio pass-through (IOW hear my guitar as I was playing it) until I spent 3 days researching how to do it and eventually added a registry value. (Before that, I tried getting Dell support's help, but they had no idea) Even now, I can't control the volume of it (it's either mute or full volume) and it outputs at unlistenable high volumes if my input levels are set correctly for recording. Obviously if you aren't planning to do any audio stuff on it, you can ignore that, but that's the kind of problem it has.

I also opted for the Blu-Ray drive, so I could hook it up to my HDTV. However, the DVI output (despite their claims) does not seem to be HDCP compliant, so purchased Blu-Rays will refuse to play unless you watch on the laptop monitor. (HDCP is the new copy protection the studios are using. You could get around it with software, but it would void your warrantee) So my plan to start watching Blu-Rays went out the window.

One thing the reviews don't tend to mention is that the touch pad is on the left side of the computer. So if you are looking to play some games on a bus or whatever, and are right-handed, it's very uncomfortable.

It's also extremely bulky, with a power brick about the size of the XBOX 360's.

Oh, and Dell loads up the hard drive (RAID in my case) with so many partitions that Windows won't let you create any more if you want to. You'll need to get Partition Magic or other software if you want to add partitions to keep your files and your OS seperate, for example.

Graphically it's about as good as the 360, maybe slightly worse.

In conclusion, no I don't recommend.

Instead of randomly posting links why not wait and see what that TC actually wants to do with the computer?

Yeah the reviews of the XPS on the website aren't exactly glowing. I'm not sure what I want from it to be honest, I guess I'm not that big of a gamer (although I do like strategy games and plan to get Empire: Total War which has quite hefty requirements) and I will have this laptop for a while so it needs to be able to last two years without getting horribly outdated (that's a tall order for any laptop though but I'm not exactly expecting to play any sequels to Crysis). I want one with a 15'' screen, not a big 17" screen since that would make it too hard to ferry it from home to university. Its also quite important that its quite comfortable to use. Hmm, difficult.

Dell XPS models are usually unnecessarily overpriced. Shop around for something with similar specs youre looking for, I'm sure there's something cheaper than an XPS that does what you want.

You should really consider this laptop- it looks pretty good for the price. and it has a 9800m GS, not a bad card. As for the XPS you were looking at, I have to say it won't be great for gaming. My friend has a laptop he bought last year and it struggles to play Empire Total War on everything low. Land battles on small scales are OK, but sea battles or big land battles are unplayable. As was Crysis on all low settings. Both were played at 1024x764. As for Dell in general, I say avoid. Buy an Acer or Toshiba, because Dell are massivly overpriced, with mediocre support and mediocre products.

they are good but nothing special and has lots of un needed things, like some stupid dell media centre which is just like the wmc and you can't make the home button do anything but open the dell media center. Also the xps1530 lacks usb ports, only 3. They also don't have particularly good battery life and are pretty heavy.
