Are there laptop computers that are just as powerful for gaming as desktop computers?

Keep in mind that I'm only interested in factory builds, I'm not expert enough to build my own.

Well, since most people can't build their own laptops, it's not expected that you would be. Yes, there can be laptops that have similar capabilities to desktops, but those features tend to add to the overall weight, and heat of the laptop making it a lot less portable. At the same time, the better the capabilities, the more money they will cost, and generally you'll pay double, or more, for a laptop with the same gaming power of a desktop.

no laptops arent as good as desktops. due to their nature their clock speeds cant be as high on their cpu's and their gpu's cant be anywhere near as good. the best gpu mobile wise is = to an hd 6970 or is slightly worse. and the best mobile cpu is = to a core i7 2600k

Generally, a desktop for half the price of a laptop will have about the same performance.

Well TC, Ill run a few things by you here that can be somewhat important for a gaming Desktop. and if lappys can be just as good.

1) a gaming desktop tends to be completely moduler, so if there by some off chance that a piece of hardware goes bad, it is easy and cheap to replace. (even for the people in the shops, I kid you not that reparing a gaming desktop, if the customer has made some good background checks, and can point to the problem, can be fixed, checked up on, and given back within an hour (IF what the customer thinks is the reason turns out right).

2) gaming desktops has space for airflow, just require you to buy a decent case. so they will stay cool, and be easy to clean out from time to time.

3) Gaming Desktops are dirt cheap in parts, meaning that you can get a whole lot for your money

4) access to what accesories you feel comfortable with, and want to rely on.

Lappy:

1) Unlike the PC a gaming laptop is NOT completely moduler, so if something important bites it, it can take alot of time before you get it back, often you will simply get a new lappy, with your own drives in it. It is no biggie, but can take a few weeks.

2) gaming laptops, gets REALLY hot over time, they do not have the needed airflow for continually gaming on it, without the risk of something biting it (we are talking about 6+ hours here tho, and it is not across the board, since a few lappys have made a point of removing this rather huge error (and one of those killing most laptops I suspect). Over time dust will settle in aswell, and with limited ways of cleaning a Lappy it will die over time. I think that yif you look around the net, you will find that most gaming lappys tend to last 2-3 years. However no one knows how the newer lappys perform, cooler chips allround, cound mean that the gaming lappys we see now, might last for the whole 5 years.

3) Gaming Laptops are often MUCH more expensive then thier desktop counterparts, which can range from 50%-100% where I live, but prices differ from country to country. But atleast where I live, I consider a gaming lappy to often be too expensive (and those who are cheap, I stay away from like the pleague)

4) Some things can be problematic on a lappy, IF you are unlucky, spare keyboard you could plug in, mice and gamepads aswell, but a thing like the monitor, is something most people are stuck with on a lappy ^^ It is not a given negative, but means that if you CAN you should have a look at how the image, looks, especially in games. Since a bad monitor on both a desktop and a lappy can really ruin it for ya -.-

But in short: you CAN find Lappys that are good for gaming, they are progressing faster then they used to , in that field, and they are cheaper aswell then they used to. I know that both MSI and ASUS has some REALLY nice ones out now. They are heavy as you wouldnt belive, and kind of big, but they are powerful enough ^^ No doubt about that :P

Surely, You CAN buy a laptop that'll run everything maxed but these cost a lot and from my experience, these quite often have overheating and low bettery life issues

The ultra high end laptops can compete against a desktop. THE PROBLEM is that the laptop goes out of date more quickly and cost ALOT more $$$$.

Is there a laptop that can compete against a build with 4 680s?

the reason laptops will never be as good as desktops for gaming is because of the power supply. The best Laptop power supplies are usually around 300-400 watts, while most are around 200 watts. With that amount of power the gpus and cpus are cut down significantly compared to the desktop versions. A laptop will be decent for gaming but can never surpass a pc.

I think he is refering to the average pc gaming rig not the rig for people with more money then they know what to do with.

My asus g75 has been awesome for my gaming needs. The thing is freaking gigantic so the temps aren't bad (good airflow). I would cry though if I had to do all my gaming on it because for some reason it won't play diablo 3 :(

There are laptops that CAN play games, but they aren't as good for gaming as desktops because of their inherent size limitations.

Lappys aren't particularly good for gaming, just due to the sheer cost of getting something powerful and they have a lot of disadvantages.

Also it doesn't take an expert to assemble a computer OP. It's simple enough to learn.

Hoping you're not too dense to know when problems are caused on the users hardware or the company's servers, something an update will fix. Just because Batman:AC has botched DX11 settings doesn't mean a persons rig is weak if it struggles with it. A buggy or broken game is a poor way to judge hardware. Here I just came up with a group of games to benchmark new rigs, Batman:AC Dx11, GTA4 pre-patch, Rage pre-patch, LA NOIRE pre-patch. You know because it's a complete fair assessment of the hardware. There are better degrees than trollology gummi don't put your eggs in one basket.
