So I didn't really know where to post, I figured it was here, now to the point.

I'm going to college soon and I don't know if I should buy one, I just want to know how useful it will be while I'm in college and if it will "survive" all those years which leads me to other question, how resistant are they? I'm going to be taking it everywhere and I wouldn't like it dying on me.

What's your budget? What kinds of things do you expect to be using your laptop for?

The budget isn't really important, I want to buy one of those laptops that are smaller than regular ones and just regular college stuff, works, investigations, etc..

I though a laptop would be useful but they aren't really needed. Laptops are painfully slow compared to desktops, fine for witting essays and web browsing but demanding things will make you hate it. Most of the time you can easily fine free computers at uni and they tend to run things much faster than laptop, oh and laptops are horrible to use for more than half an hour or so, spending all day on one will give your a crock back. If you have lots of gaps between classes then yes they can be useful, if all your classes are together, just get a desktop. As for the toughness they seem to be fairly robust, but I've always been careful so who knows, they will break a lot more easily than your phone.

well if your going to get a laptop keep in mind a few things. Make sure when you carry your laptop around keep it in a protective sleeve of some sort. Do not have textbooks against it as it can cause damage, and make sure you try to get an extended warranty. My previous laptop a gateway had non stop problems where the dvd drive had to be repaired 3 times already. My newer HP/Compaq laptop seems sturdier and the customer support i find is really good(wanted to purchase a 12-cell battery). Oh and one major thing.....dont sit on the laptop :P

all kidding aside laptops are great for portability but if you need power you can build a desktop much more powerful for much cheaper, so keep that im mind

Hahah macbooks. Don't bother. They're overpriced, just like every other mac. Go with a good quality dell or sager notebook. What's with everyone ragging on laptops? They're not made of paper. They stand up fairly well to being put in bookbags/whatever and being moved around all day, that's what they were designed for. How much do you want to spend on the laptop? It's a great resource for taking notes in class, I use mine every day. It's also great to have for those breaks between classes.

I recommend not going with toshiba if you do end up buying a laptop. I bought one sunday and it actually died after 3 days :?. My new Asus one is great though.

I bought an expensive Dell one for gaming for college and it hasn't really gotten damaged, one time the video card broke and I had to send it in to get repaired (for free) but it was back to me within a week and other than that no problems at all in the last 2 years and it still runs most current games (except for like high end Crysis or whatever). BTW don't get a macbook, my friend got a macbook and it cost about as much as mine but the video card was integrated so he couldn't even run Spore when it came out...
