Are mmo games really worth the monthly fee?

I have been wanting to get into mmo games but its too late to get into WOW since most players have high levels already. I'm thinking of joining LOTRO but the monthly fee seems a bit high. I'll pay it if it is worth it, I just need some opinions of the gameplay.

It depends on how much you like MMOs. To me, no. To many others, they are.

I think it's definately worth it. I used to play WoW and personally I don't think the monthly fee was that bad, and I didn't even have an income back then.

It will get boring though, just make sure you stop playing when you don't enjoy it anymore, unlike the millions of people playing WoW right now.

I played WoW up until a month before the expansion. it had its ups and downs but it was fun for the most part until the raiding got way out of hand. i found myself raiding 4/5 days out of the week and pvped on the weekends. it turned into a big grind and i couldnt take it nemore so i quit. my advice is if ur gonna try mmos dnt get too caught up in it. as for myself im waiting to see what warhammer is gonna be liek but im done with WoW.

Most mmofps games are worth it, but those extremely boring grinding games isn't. I'm still amazed that people actually pay so they can grind all day long just for that extra level up or whatever ..

most mmorpgs come with a free month, and you can easily get enough playtime in month 1 to warrant the intial cost of purchase

so buy it, play for a month - then ask yourself if the monthly fee is worth it, because you're the only person who can really decide

It's worth it WHILE you play and enjoy it but if / when interest begins to slip then of course not. You pay for a service, server, maintenance, bug fixes, content, support etc...Really it's down to each individual to decide whether they feel they are getting VFM tbh. Besides...most games come with a month or so free play inc in the purchase price so if u don't like th game after that then jump ship and don't spend another penny.

Good luck :)

Ade.

Funny you should mention...Most MMO are 15$ a month. So it takes 4months to add up to one new game + the initial free

So if you are buying more then 2 games in 5months technically...instead of just buying one game and playing it. Who is being more efficient now with money? Or wasting?

I loved MMO/RPGs, but monthly fees are the worse part I think, some of my friends loved it.... I used to play FFXI, loved it but I quit after two months. Now Im on GuildWars, much better cuz it's free online.

No for me, because i don't enjoy them.

Basketweaving is worth the money if you like it. This is a personal decision, "is it worth it to you?" is the question.

I think the majority of MMOs really aren't worth it. I want to have fun when I play a game and most MMORPGs feel like a chore. If you want an MMO, you should wait for games like Huxley and Infinity: Quest for Earth. I think Star Trek: Online and Stargate Worlds also look like fun...but there really isn't much info to go on.

Why do so many people complain about $15 a month? I spend $15 on impulse buying every hour on ebay. I lose $15 in the wash every week. Do youl ike coffee? A coffee a day is $30 a month. COME ON NOW

While I'm not a fan of Runescape, you make a good point. Why is it that in so many MMORPGs no one chats? Everyone just hides in guilds with their friends. One MMO where I see a lot of chatting is WWII online...even though WWII online can be really frustrating to play sometimes.

LOTRO will always be easily worth it to me, but I really like the game a lot and I love these online make a character more powerful and more experienced games. I got hooked on Diablo and ever since this is my favorite type of game. I just paid the 200 bucks. I liked it so much and I already had a level 26 elf hunter and a level 7 minstrel I'm working on.....I was playing such an obscene amount of time and enjoying it so much I thought why not just throw my money in the pot and see how long the game lasts. I really love it so I don't mind paying. What other entertainment could I buy this cheaply to spend 25 hours a week on for 4 weeks every month and then it only cost 10 bucks or 15 bucks? That's insanely cheap. Try looking at it that way and maybe rent your movies from netflix instead of the video store or going to the theater and really you could probably afford it...just by making a small change every month to your entertainment budget. See you in the game!

If you find an mmo that you really like, and really enjoy playing, then yes it is worth it. My advice to you is that if you see a game that you really like you should research it thoroughly. If it's a downloadable game, then maybe check to see if there are any private servers for it and give one of those a whirl to test out the games core elements. However, bear in mind that beyond the core elements of the game private servers can be, and usually are, quite a different experience than the actual pay to play servers.

Some good places to check out MMO's are:

MMORPG.com

MMOSite.com

and This quirkly little page I found through Google.

I'd say don't go by someone else's word. It all depends on the user's taste. I used to play a lot of FPSs like CSS and CoD but I got bored and wanted to try something new. A lot of my friends play WoW so I decided to join them and I liked it. I've been playing for a few months now and I'm still enjoying it, although it DOES get repetitive sometimes. WoW also isn't as epic as it seems, sure there are 40 man pvp raids and stuff, but it can be slow at times. Another factor is if you know people who play it, because it adds a lot to the fun-o-meter if your playing with some friends. A downside is that after level 40, everyone is kinda focused on their own adventures and leveling that its hard to talk to someone (but when you get to the level cap, everyone starts talking again). Once I get to 70 and get my full money's worth, I'll probably go play guild wars or LotR:online, or maybe warhammer online will come out by then.

First off, its not too late to get into WoW, dont feel like you should settle for LOTRO.  I just started a level 1 character and its as much fun to play the game as a lowbie as it was two years ago.  Second, WoW is worth the fee to me since its fun.

Ahhh thats the biggest problem I Have with the game, the guilds.  Some are very stupid and dont know how to have fun, but fortunately most are casual enough and just want to have fun.  So if a guild "forces" you to do instances, f*** 'em!  Go join a fun guild, like mine!  We have casual runs such as Kara and whatnot on Fridays and Saturdays, but nobody is forced to come.  Our Guild Master merely takes a headcount on thursday of who can come so she can recruit some peeps from other guilds, and off we go.

You have a job + money, then you can play an MMO.

It is never too late to start WoW, you could join a new server, or just start on an existing one. People make new toons all the time. As far as LOTR goes, I beta'ed it for a little while. It was kind of fun, I wish I could do a free trial of the real thing just to get the feel of it. The level 15 cap on beta was pretty screwy.Â
